What pisses me off even more was that Hendry made it a point to make this move in time for him to be eligible for the post season roster. Such horsecrap. If a starter gets rocked and we need a reliever to eat up another 3 or 4 innings, I don't mind Trachsel in that role, though I would rather pitch a 78-yr-old Sandy Koufax (signed in the Israeli baseball league this year!) instead. If he's used for anything else, Hendry is truly stupid. I hope Lou's intolerance for crap players mitigates Hendry's brainfart here.

Mortgaging the future for a questionable upgrade of a team thats 4 games over .500...thats Cub baseball

I'm not sure there is any mortgaging the future here. The worst part is the loss of Moore's trade value, but neither Moore or Cherry had much future with the team whatsoever.

Here's another thought-is Hendry just trying to clear 40 man space now?

That's my assumption. But why?

But at least get another prospect in return.

So the Cubs are going into the playoff stretch run with a guy STL gave up on late in their stretch run and another whom the pitching starved Mets gave up on as well.

Neither Moore nor Cherry are all that good, but they are the type of player smart teams include in trades for actual good players.

There's been talk about Kevin Hart being called up when the rosters expand. I'm guessing this opens up a spot on the 40-man for him.

They had a spot going into today. This leaves it at 38.

There was already a spot on the 40 man for him (the one Rapada opened up yesterday (Coats was the spot that went to Monroe)). I do find it strange that the Cubs have taken off Dopirak, Coats, Rapada, Cherry, and Moore now, and have replaced them mostly with people whose contracts expire at the end of the year. There will be plenty of spots now on the 40 man come November.

I do agree that these two should have been traded for at least like a middle IF prospect that could be used as the backup MIF next year at the mininum. This is just a waste of their value.

Well this is somewhat encouraging from the Trib...

Trachsel is 6-8 with a 4.48 earned-run average at Baltimore but is 1-1 in six August starts with a 2.37 ERA. He'll likely become the long man in the bullpen and a spot starter as well. The Cubs will need a sixth starter for their Sept. 15 double-header at St. Louis.

If that's what he's used for...I'll cope.

I still would prefer Gallagher to start vs Stl then Trachsel

I'm sorry, I used too harsh of words. I just meant that they gave up decent assets for a marginal pitcher who we didn't need.

I have a wedding to go that day, which will cause me to miss both games of that DH. And to think all this time I've been complaining about that.

If he starts the night game, it'll only be in the 5th when we leave the reception around 11pm.

You are kidding, right?

Actually, I'm pretty sure you're not.

Gallagher would be much less likely than Trachsel to go deep into the game.

Gallagher has been hit hard in the majors this year. A 7.82 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP.

Now, for a year, I would be furious if they selected Trachsel over Gallagher. Gallagher is going to make adjustments and end up being better than Trachsel. Only 1 start though? I think Trachsel is the better option right now, especially since Trachsel has good numbers against the St. Louis lineup.

Now, like I've said before, that still wouldn't be justification for trading for him (they definitely overpaid), but I think Trachsel is an upgrade for that one game.
