No days off rest of the year. And the day/night DH against the Cubs. Roster expansion should help them at the margins, but isn't this good news for us?

35 games in 34 days is going to be tough for them. But then again they are the luckiest team in the history of baseball. Let's just take care of business and try not to worry about them.

Luckiest? Do I sense some animosity or jealousy? Let's call a spade a spade, shall we.

The Cards also have to play out-of-division series against the Diamondbacks (away) and Phillies (home). Meanwhile, the Cubs toughest out-of-division series is at home against the Dodgers.

So the Cards have a slightly tougher road. In the end, it's really the games between the Cards/Cubs/Brewers that will determine the division. Cards and Cubs each have 3 against Brewers, and they have 5 against each other.

I thought he was being a little generous. He should have said the luckiest team in pro sporting history.

Any team as craptastic as last year's Cardinal team that wins the championship can't be considered anything other than lucky as hell.

Absolutely. Who else could count on 2 vastly superior ballclubs laying down for them in playoffs? Only the Cards.

I'd give anything for the cubs to luck into a championship...or buy one....anything.

The cardinals are always there, we just have to beat the teams we play from now on, because we've taken care of the head to head with them.

To be fair, there have been other poor teams winning the World Series. .

The '87 Twins for example - 85-77

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/1987.shtml

Cards weren't healthy until the end of the year, and they had a TON of blown saves, helping to bring down that record. One could argue they weren't as crappy as that 83 wins would suggest.

But yes, they were pretty poor compared to other WS winners. I guess that is payback for winning 105 and 100 wins the two years before and not winning it all. Baseball is funny that way.

Finally - 83 wins is only 5 wins short (4 if the Cards make up that game vs. SF last year) of the juggernaut '03 Cub team. It's not as unimaginable as some people like to make it out to be.

I think that's well said. Not counting the 2 make up games the Cards have to play (one at Wrigley, one at Shea), each team has 10 series left in the season. Quick analysis:

(1) 6 of the series are washes: each team plays a home and away series with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Houston.

(2) Each team has a series with Milwaukee, albeit the Cards have to go to Miller while the Cubs get the Brewers at Wrigley. Slight advantage to the Cubs.

(3) They play a crucial 4 game series at Busch Stadium. Cubs have played better at Busch as of late and I think their pitching is stronger, but the Cards are at home. Slight advantage to the Cards.

(4) Each team plays one series against an NL west team. Cards have to go to the desert to play D-Backs, while the Cubs entertain LA. Slight advantage to the Cubs.

(5) Each team plays one series against an NL East team. Cubs have to go to Florida, who while struggling always play the Cubs tough; Cards entertain Phillies, who should be motivated by the Wild card race. I call it a wash.

Final score: 2 washes, 2 advantages for Cubs, 1 advantage for STL.

Cubs by a hair!

I doubt the matchups decide anything as they likely end up being split. Those games favor the brewers more than anyone.

I don't think Joaquin Andujar felt too lucky. Considering they got jobbed out of a world championship by one of the worst umpiring calls in memory, I don't think they can qualify.

I don't even know who that is, I was born in 81 so i dont remember what you are referring to. Finding a 30 year old, soon-to-be best hitter in baseball after every team had past on him 2,238 times would more than even out whatever you are referring to. But I don't really care.

If you looked at my paragraph construction, you'd see that I viewed the first and last sentence as the most important of my prior post.

So the Cards are 1 game into their 35 in 34 run, and basically all the Cardinal fans I know have already started whining. I figured it wouldnt start untill bout 10 games in, but nope after 1 game Im already hearing "Yea, the only reason you guys might win the division is because of this bs schedule" blah blah blah.....Anybody else hearing this yet?

Living a few miles out of St. Louis, I hear them non-stop. The only peace and quiet I've had this year is when it looked like they were dead in the water...many of them stop watching games altogether. This resurgence has been more than a little annoying because those same people are now self proclaimed die-hards that never gave up hope. Some even claim that they deserve to win because of all the hardships they've had this year.

I keep hearing it's a friendly rivalry, but it sure doesn't feel that way. I'd personally like to see the Cards moved to an open air stadium in Las Vegas.

Our schedule isn't that much easier. It was easier, until the Cards went over .500 -- that's because those 5 games with the Cards were supposed to be against a chump team, and now they're against one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Also, we play Cincy too many times right at the end. Cincy punks us. Don't know why, but they do.

Sure we have 2 days off, but that's not for awhile.

I just don't see us as having that much of an advantage. We are simply going to need to get hot or we won't make the playoffs.

That schedule reminds me of the 2004 Cubs, who had no days off for about the last month of the season (longer than normally allowed under the CBA) because of having to reschedule an entire series against Florida due to a hurricane. I always thought the Cubs were burned out by the last week of the season and that was one of the reasons for blowing the Wild Card. Hopefully the schedule will have a similar effect on the Cardinals.

Yes, this.

It's not necessarily that the Cardinals worry me, it's that the Cubs worry me. It's nice that we have a pitching staff that we can really lean on, however, we're going to have to begin scoring more runs or we're in big trouble. I know, I know, groundbreaking stuff.

It's only a friendly rivalry if you don't live in the middle of it. Both sides can get quite nasty. There are trashy fans on both sides.

The schedule is a non issue. It's baseball, play the game.

As for deserving it - I doubt it. They kinda deserved last year's run. This year would be fun but nobody is really remember Hancock through they year - not like when DK died. Now THAT team would have been a team who "deserved" to win it due to some hardship. .

They don't have the starting pitching and team defense to sustain that kind of pace....basically the Cardinals have to win 85 games to have a chance of tying the Cubs....(who can win 86 games by taking all the series's down the stretch except StL)...

To win 21 games the Cards have to go 11-5 against the (16) non contenders they face outside of resurgent Cincinnati (meaning imploding Milwaukee, plus Pitts & Houston). Then they have to go 10-8 against AZ, Phil, Chic, NY...Cinc... Two swings will spell Cardinals fate as a contender...

7 games traveling between AZ-Chi-Cinc on the road....I say the best they can expect is 3-4 (but 2-5 might be reality). That would mean they would have to win either 7 out of 11 against Phil(3) NY(1) Chic(4) Cinc(3)...one on the road....let us say they lose that other make up game in NY....that means they have to win 7 of 10 against Phil, Chi, Cinci or take all series with just one loss....all that to make 85 wins!

Worse than the Blues Brothers leaving the resort wearing sunglasses.
