This is a surprisingly slow thread compared to usual transactions. I know he's on the team already, but this is a pretty big deal. Are people actually working now or something?

i just woke up. this is great news indeed. i couldnt imagine z on any team but the cubs anyways.

Well good. Now we need him to get back on track. Think about it: if Z's last 2 starts would have been "typical", we'd be in first right now and the Cards would still be at arm's length.

So we need El Toro now to step it up. Especially since I believe Sheets is coming back soon (thought I heard that from somewhere).

i have a feeling that sheets and soriano are going to come back at pretty much the exact same time

i think we have the better player...

I think re-signing threads are a little slower than new player threads. Not as much information to dicuss other than money, and frankly some people, I think, would rather talk baseball than dollars. And we all know Z and how he plays...nothing new to discuss there.

It's good news, but it's not that big of a story. Z constantly saying he was going to remain a Cub made it seem like it was inevitable. There's really not a lot to talk about, in relation to new signings/trades. If it was November and coming up on a deadline like Ramirez, that's different, but it's a mid-year extension.

One thing I give props to Hendry is not letting our good players go away through free agency, he resigns them. Sure, he signs the mediocre ones to crappy deals but at least he has signed Lee, ARam(twice) and now Z before they could get away.

It's actually almost bigger news for the teams that may have been wanting to go after him as a free agent.

Zambrano has resigned 5 year 90 mil. Per Bruce Levine.

So the guy last night wasn't BSing.

proving (once again) that people need to not crucify posters before the rumor is proven true or false

strange place to announce it but 18 mil a year is a ton

Compared to the pitching market? Hardly. Z would have gotten 7 years, 130 million+ out there.

Props to BleacherBadger for bringing us this news last night!

Probably true which makes the market completely out of whack. No A-Rod now fellas

Not impossible to still sign A-Rod. They'll have $105 mil. or so committed for '08 with arguably only a catcher and an upgraded bat to sign. $90 mil. committed for '09.

all they need is a big bat. with, hopefully, theriot, pie, and soto starting on opening day and hill and marshall, hopefully, in the starting rotation--this will make getting that bat much more doable. i'd like to see me some andruw jones in right field.

lf-soriano

ss-theriot

1b-lee

3b-aram

rf-jones

2b-derosa

cf-pie

c-soto

me likey that lineup.

Payroll would have to increase by about $20M.

to 110 mil, if 90 is committed for next year?

Look at my post from the last page, we have 100M committed if we get rid of Prior, Blanco, and Ohman (assuming Eyre picks up his option)

my mistake. however, i doubt that increasing payroll to 120 mil if indeed necessary will be much of a problem for the new ownership. i anticipate that canning's group will probably increase payroll if anything.

the cubs, even though they are a pretty profitable franchise, are a baseball team, not a high risk/high return investment. they'll still be run at a profit, i don't expect new ownership to run in the red--but i imagine any new ownership team, if the team switches hands, won't worry much about the bottom line in terms of revenue.

Big Z (signed UNDER what he is worth in this market) makes this team more marketable. Good for Z, Good for the Cubs, and good for all us fans that love him so.

Wow, didn't really expect this. I felt that the Cubs would re-sign Zambrano, but not until he saw what was on the market in the offseason. Looks like Zambrano really did want to stay here. Good start to the day.
