I think it was GatewayRedbirds.com that I just read this on (I've been to a lot of sites in the past few minutes)...

The Cubs will be the second team in history to have 2 players making more than $18million on average...Sori and Z. Is that right? I assume the Yanks have to be the other team, right?

I didn't see that on there.

I heard there is a 6th year player option @ 19m. Can anyone confirm?

Nothing yet. Press Conference is in 35 minutes.

(where) can this press conference be seen? WGN? Internet?

Any possibility he decided to sign at a lesser contract than many thought he could get in FA because he IS "feeling some arm/shoulder pains" and wanted to get the big payday in the event it the problem is persistent?????

Talk about an awesome birthday present!

well, actually, if Z wants to give me some of that cash, that would be an awesome birthday present.

strange place to announce it but 18 mil a year is a ton

Compared to the pitching market? Hardly. Z would have gotten 7 years, 130 million+ out there.

Props to BleacherBadger for bringing us this news last night!

Probably true which makes the market completely out of whack. No A-Rod now fellas

Not impossible to still sign A-Rod. They'll have $105 mil. or so committed for '08 with arguably only a catcher and an upgraded bat to sign. $90 mil. committed for '09.

For 22 guys, I calc about 108. But it all depends on how backloaded Z's is, what we do with Prior and Ohman, if Eyre picks up his option, if Blanco retires, . Theres a possibility we could drop off 11.7M. Still need a catcher.

Z~18

Sori-13

Lee-13

ARAM-14

Lilly-7

Demp-5.5

all they need is a big bat. with, hopefully, theriot, pie, and soto starting on opening day and hill and marshall, hopefully, in the starting rotation--this will make getting that bat much more doable. i'd like to see me some andruw jones in right field.

i think espn news or 2 is the best bet

Well, YES!!!

And I know this is going to sound stupid, but is it possible to trade Z through waivers right after an extension? My dad said he was watching the news (he said it was either 2,5,7,or 9) and they said the Cubs had some blockbuster trade for Z in place with the players unknown. I asked him if he was joking and he said go check the computer and I did to see Z signed, which is great news in itself. I told him they just signed him and he probably heard wrong (maybe they said blockbuster signing with the terms unkown), but he's swearing to me that they said trade, and my Dad isn't exactly a jokester.

Nonetheless, i'm sure it was just a mistake on either the news' part or my dads', but I just wanted to make sure there's some rule against this or something, right?

And no, i'm not the one to start fake things so please, if you're going to tell me i'm lying save it, because I don't even believe this one bit myself, but I have to throw it out there. I'm sure if someone had news it would be Rosenthal or something, not a local channel.

Yeah this is really great.

I think this actually is good for the sale. You're buying a club that has 3 star position players in Soriano, Lee, and ARam, and they also have an ace pitcher in the rotation and a decent 2nd starter in Lilly.

$90 million is pretty much of low significance compared to the value of having an ace on the staff when selling a $1billion ballclub.

It's a marketable team, a team that should look attractive to buyers, keep the price high.

Now hopefully Z's last 2 starts are just a bump in the road and not an indication of something more.
