I think it was GatewayRedbirds.com that I just read this on (I've been to a lot of sites in the past few minutes)...

The Cubs will be the second team in history to have 2 players making more than $18million on average...Sori and Z. Is that right? I assume the Yanks have to be the other team, right?

I didn't see that on there.

I heard there is a 6th year player option @ 19m. Can anyone confirm?

Nothing yet. Press Conference is in 35 minutes.

(where) can this press conference be seen? WGN? Internet?

i think espn news or 2 is the best bet

csn

UGH, stupid client wouldnt shut up so I missed everything Hendry said...anyone hear?

strange place to announce it but 18 mil a year is a ton

Compared to the pitching market? Hardly. Z would have gotten 7 years, 130 million+ out there.

Props to BleacherBadger for bringing us this news last night!

Probably true which makes the market completely out of whack. No A-Rod now fellas

Not impossible to still sign A-Rod. They'll have $105 mil. or so committed for '08 with arguably only a catcher and an upgraded bat to sign. $90 mil. committed for '09.

all they need is a big bat. with, hopefully, theriot, pie, and soto starting on opening day and hill and marshall, hopefully, in the starting rotation--this will make getting that bat much more doable. i'd like to see me some andruw jones in right field.

me likey that lineup.

Payroll would have to increase by about $20M.

to 110 mil, if 90 is committed for next year?

I hope he's not hurt.

Considering the manifying glass that these players are under today (with Perry and Lou noticing Lee changing his hip motion at the plate for example) the Cubs would know if Z is hurt. Let's by honest, the guy is a great athlete, but isn't in the best of shape. He's going to get dehydrated on hot days if he isn't careful, and we all know he goes through ups and downs when his head isn't on straight. Hopefully this news will allow him to refocus on mowing down the Cards on Sunday.

Kinda looks like his agent is about to cry...and if I'd be making that kinda scratch, I'd be crying tears of joy too.

Praver said there were two failed signing attempts.

Jets are flying over in practice for the Air and Water show.

Look at my post from the last page, we have 100M committed if we get rid of Prior, Blanco, and Ohman (assuming Eyre picks up his option)

This is a surprisingly slow thread compared to usual transactions. I know he's on the team already, but this is a pretty big deal. Are people actually working now or something?

Like Work has ever stopped us from posting.

Wow. Nice little surprise going into the weekend. Nice. Good work Cubs. Good to see they locked up our ace. How bad would it have sucked seeing Z sign with another team?

From the last part of Hendry's part, it sounded like he insinuated that they reached a rough patch at the end of the negotiatons and that Z's crappy last start made Z give in a little.

"Working" from home because I'm taking a client to a rooftop today makes it much easier for me to post!

I think re-signing threads are a little slower than new player threads. Not as much information to dicuss other than money, and frankly some people, I think, would rather talk baseball than dollars. And we all know Z and how he plays...nothing new to discuss there.

Z admits that it weighed on his mind a little in his last start. Evidently Hendry and Praver have talked every day for the last 10-12 days.

They came real close getting it done before his last start. Thus it may be a reason he pitched so poorly...

"Not everything is about money"---Z

Not that he's exactly hurting for it. :P

But still...great line from him.

Yeah the question was about that he could have made 140+ in the offseason.

yep...i love big z...

i just bought a zambrano and soriano shirt after i found out that z signed...

the soriano shirt is backordered though...which is very fitting...

oh well...our team is really and truly comprised of very classy and stand up players

i love this team...no matter how much they frustrate at times

Jim said that they originally were talking 4 year extention at the beginning of the year.

Z responded without hestitation that he never expected it not to get done.
