Lou said on Comcast that Marshall has a scratched cornea and in hindsight probably should not have pitched today as it bothered him considerably. Maybe this explains his poor performance today.

Unfortunately the most likely explanation for his poor performance today was that he's Sean Marshall.

well...there you go...

how does one go about scratching their cornea?

Probably from wearing contacts. I scratched mine before and it was painful...

Sean's been one of the best #5 pitchers in the league, up until today.

Weak argument.

Philadelphia produced seven runs in 2 2/3 innings off Cubs starter Sean Marshall, who pitched despite waking up with a scratched cornea in his right eye, which the pitcher said happened by sleeping wrong.

What was he doing? Sleeping with a sharp stick?

How is what he said in any way wrong?

Right now Marshall is a No. 5, No. 5's get lit up from time to time.

He's young and he's not a guy that you expect to dominate every time he steps on the mound, he's the exact kind of pitcher that you would expect to give up a lot of runs every once in a while.

Seemed to me the tone of his post was meant to convey that Sean is a terrible pitcher. That is clearly not the case, at least not up until today's outing.

#1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, spot starters, closers turned starters, starters turned closers, Mariano Rivera, K-Rod, etc, etc, etc get lit up from time to time.

Yes, Marshall regressed to the norm, and that should have been expected sometime. But to say it's simply because he's Sean Marshall, is implying that he's Jason Marquis or something.

The implication was that Marshall is a poor pitcher. This is Marshall's second (maybe third depending on your definition) bad outing of the year. That to me is FAR from a poor pitcher. Now if he was trying to imply something else, then that certainly didn't come across. Whether it was because he was trying to say he was a poor pitcher, or whether it was simply that he wasn't getting his point across very well...either way, it was a weak argument.

two corneal abrasions here.

one was a paper cut

the other an "ulcerated cornea".

Apparently I wore disposable contacts too long (about 4 months) and the bacteria ate through my cornea...fun.

Maybe he slept in his contacts.

I think that his abrasive nature is causing you to assume his argument, because I certainly didn't take it that way.

Sean Marshall is going to be a pitcher that will probably always be prone to a game here and there where he gives up a bunch of runs.

Marshalls last 10 outings

ER's

1, 2,4,0,6,2,2,1,1,7

6 quality starts in every ten, I'll take that.

4 wins 3 losses 3 no decisions.

Should probably be 6-3 in his last 10 but 2 of his no decisions he gave up 2 runs and the bats couldn't help him out.

It's not like banedon is one of the people that has stated beef with Meph. I couldn't think of another way to interpret what he said. Every pitcher everywhere ever is prone to a bad outing. If Zambrano got shelled would he respond with "unfortunately it's because he's Carlos Zambrano" And would there not be a strong response from people(myself included) about how they're sick of the harping on Zambrano's emotions being his downfall. Meph isn't one to beat around the bush, if he meant that he had a bad outing cause pitchers that aren't great have them he'd say it. I think it's pretty clear he doesn't think much of Marshall as a pitcher.
