Pie for Laird and Gagne? Right....

According to the New York Post, the Rangers might consider trading catcher Gerald Laird and a reliever to the Cubs for centerfield prospect Felix Pie. Makes sense, especially if the Rangers go against our GM's advice and take Salty.

Gee, you think they might consider it?

That's comparable to me considering having sex with Jessica Alba if she asked me if I wanted to.

Carroll, I don't think this means much. Cubs are a money contender, so you here there names with big values. Griffey? Dunn? Johan Santana? Torii Hunter? Dontrelle? Teix? I imagine Carroll has heard a few big names with talk about whether the Cubs might not be a fit. And then, whenever Cubs name comes up, inevitably Pie's name has to enter the conversation. Nobody's going to trade a big name (other than perhaps old Griffey) to Cubs without Pie being involved.

That wouldn't mean the Cubs are "shopping" Pie. Just that his name tends to come up. Simply because you can't discuss Cubs trading for a big gun without considering Pie's inclusion.

Take Pie out of the discussion, and write the Cubs off in terms of any big name pickups that are less than 38 years old.

He better be going for something great, otherwise it makes absolutely no sense. Who's going to play CF for us in the next coming years? Jones? Bleh.

Colvin?

Next year?

Presumably, Jones in 2008, then who knows in 2009. But with Colvin in AA, it wouldn't be a surprise to think the Cubs thought of him as their guy by then.

Colvin makes Pie look like Adam Dunn in terms of taking walks. He's got 14 walks all year long. He only has an OPS of .700 right now in AA.

Hey, I'm not saying it's my plan, just that it would make sense to believe the Cubs think it's a legit plan.

Obviously Soriano has LF for 8 years. They are extremely high on Colvin, given the aggressive promotion for no good reason. One would think Soriano, Pie, Colvin is on somebody's mind, but if they want to get a "legit" RF, then they will probably trade one of Pie or Colvin.

Wow-that's actually good news to me. I hadn't checked on him in a couple of weeks-he's been on a hot streak and may actually be starting to figure out AA.

I think Kroeger is better in right.

The Marlins are known to absolutely love Pie.

How about some sort of deal in which we come away with Jeremy Hermida?

That's a stellar idea.

Soriano

Church

Lee

Ramirez

Hermida

DeRosa

Theriot/Cedeno

Kendall(ideally Soto)

I'd swap Church and Hermida, but yeah. I love the idea of acquiring Hermida; is there any chance he's actually available?

Kroeger doesn't figure into the future much at all.

For Pie? Absolutely. However, I'd be reluctant to swap those two. If Hendry gives up Pie, I'd prefer it be for established producers.

Can Hermida be described as an established producer yet?

Hermida has an amazing MiLB track record, and he's hitting pretty well this year with signs he's due to break out(better as the season's gone along, 900+ OPS away from Pro Player, etc).

I'd say no, but he is certainly trending in the correct direction.

Doesn't Carroll suck at trade rumors?

I don't think he's too bad. His "Mill" column during the deadline and Winter Meetings is usually pretty good.

I think its hard to judge guys like this, they can only report what they have been told by GM's, scouts, etc. Who knows that they are being told is the exact truth.

To deal Pie would be a mistake even if we got a big name player. I long for the day that the Cubs hold onto a player like Pie let him work out his flaws and become a great player for us not someone else.

you say that as if the Cubs have had hitters go elsewhere and blossom into great hitters since...oh, let's say anytime in the past 20-25 years.

Joe Carter - traded 23 years ago.

Joe Carter wasn't to shabby now was he, I believe he has a couple rings on his finger! I wasn't talking about just hitters I was talking about any player, pitcher, batter and ballgirl for that matter.

Dealing Pie for a midline fill in player? Don't do it Jim. Even after you leave Chicago, we never forget someone who screws us over. Remember that.

Joe Carter was pretty terrible.

What position players have the Cubs given up on that became great for someone else? Maybe I am forgetting someone that is obvious, but the last young position player I can remember being traded by the Cubs who then went on to have a good career is Joe Carter. That trade worked out fine for us.
