Isn't Matt Stairs more less the white version of Darryle Ward?

count me in....so long as he comes cheaply.

Except Stairs can hit HRs.

Historically, when both have gotten a decent amount of playing time they've each hit around the same number of home runs and had similar slugging percentages.

Very true, I guess I should've just specified this year. Stairs has 13 I think, and Ward has 0. I can't even recall Ward ever coming close. I love having Ward on the team, he's done a great job, but if we could land a guy who gets on base like him and can hit for some power, I think we'd have to for the right price.

That's what I figured you meant, but I was just making sure. :)

As for Ward's lack of power this year, it seems like pitchers are avoiding him like the plague. He's got a very good OBP and for the first quarter of the year it seemed like he'd be intentionally walked every time he pinch hit.

I traded Alan Embree for Matt Stairs on my fantasy league. This occured a month ago, not in 1997. Stairs went berserk. He was more consistent for me than Michael Cuddyer and Nick Swisher. Stairs was legging out triples and he even stole a base. I wouldn't sign him to a 5 year deal but I'd be ecstatic if he joined the club for the stretch run. You know Griffey will get hurt crashing into the ivy in his first home game. It's inevitable.

I don't think its the ivy that will hurt him . . . :D

i was never too high on ward, but i'm still surprised at his complete lack of power. it doesn't even seem like he's hit any doubles.

Maybe he was hanging around Floyd too much? Don't get me wrong both with great avg., but the power outage is weird.

Long story. Technically it's a 20 team league. There are 10 owners and every team gets a minor league squad. There are 520 spots, not counting injured players. You get to keep 20 players each year.

and derrek lee and aramis ramirez and, to a lesser extent, alfonso soriano. all are below their pre-established power norms. i guess you could include jacque jones, but he's sucked in all facets so far this year.

FWIW--I heard the Cubs are also scouting KC this week to look at both Reggie Sanders and Emil Brown. Neither is a difference maker, but both could be had for essentially nothing (other than salary pickup) if the Cubs wanted one of them.

Victor Diaz was demoted by Texas to AAA, any interest in him? Bad OBP, but he hits for power. He killed us when he was in the NL.

One of the other Cubs boards has been talking up Xavier Nady in Pittsburgh; I'd like that, but why would Pittsburgh want to move him? He's still young and produces with the bat, I guess I don't see the motivation for a trade on their part.

I was a strong advocate for signing Matty Ballgame, the subject of this thread, when he was a FA a year and a half ago; Hendry went for John Mabry instead. :x

I'm running out of possibilities here. If Los Angeles is committed to Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre because of their contracts, they can't find room to play both of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. Wow, would I love to have either of them. Problem is, the pitcher we could send them in a fair trade (eg, Sean Marshall) does not address a weakness for them; LA has tons of pitching already.

Wily Mo Pena is available, but he's no better than Emil Brown this year. Yankees won't move Abreu now that he's heating up some and they think they're still in the playoff hunt. Reds are asking too much for Griffey, the Dunn thing has been beaten to death here. Pat Burrell is a worse choice than Dunn given his contract and poorer production (though he's certainly available for a low price in trade).

Not a lot of options here.

I wouldn't mind Brown or Sanders, although I would probably much rather see them grab Lofton or Stairs.

I still favor Lofton the most, even if he lacks pop.

Ethier would be sensational. In another thread talking about the rotation I suggested adding someone like Vazquez, maybe that would free up the flexibility to deal Marshall in that type of move.

Nady is one of the most underrated players in baseball.

eh, he's not that's good.

Career .770 OPS (103 OPS+), .790 last year (95+), .820 this year (114+). Gets on base less than 34% of the time. He kills LH pitching, but has just a .727 OPS vs. RHPs in over 1000 ABs. He's a platoon player, and at 29 in November, probably not getting much better.

I love Ethier, but isn't he just a lefty Matt Murton?

Yup.

I'd love to him either way though.

Pretty much, but he's got the defensive ability/reputation to actually get playing time in RF.

Fun fact about Ethier: His OBP and SLG are identical this year v. RHP and LHP. Only a 4 point difference in OPS last year too, so he's not a guy that needs a platoon partner.

I mentioned trading for Vazquez and then using Marshall in a deal, but the Dodgers want starting pitching, what about a 3-way deal with Ethier/Murton/Vazquez as main components?

yeah thats a good idea, since vazquez is the only guy performing this year who can be had (other than oswalt).

how does

Cubs get: Ethier, Vazquez

Dodgers get: Marshall, and Petrick

White Sox get: Murton, and Meloan

sound?

Cubs need another character like him and he can provide some versitility, but with Ward (despite the injury) I don't see him as a possible fit. I see a bigger need for a RH'ed bat off the bench with some pop.

Of course, moreso than a bat off the bench any serious upgrades should be considered at SS/CF, but that's wishful thinking at this point.

If Ward is going to be out until Septemeber (I don't really know the time table), then we could get Stairs and then have both in September.

Picking up Vasquez adds a lot of salary.

My suggestion wasn't for us to get both Ethier and Vazquez, there's no way we get the 2 best and highest profile players in a 3 way deal like that. Vazquez goes to the Dodgers, Ethier comes here, and Murton + change from us and LA goes to the ChiSox. We don't get an improvement in the rotation, but we fill out RF cheaply for the forseeable future without really dealing much of consequence.

dont you think the whitesox would just rather have ethier?

That was my thinking too. I would think that a trade of Vazquez to the Dodgers for Ethier & change or low minor leaguer would be more appealing to Kenny Williams and the Sox.

Reading some of the threads I see someone got info that the Cubs were scouting Reggie Sanders. I didn't want to mention he's name after all just hours after suggesting we could get Jason Kendall Mr. Hendry did just that. Do you think he reads this forum? Any who Hey Jim if Reggie is not suitable see if you could get Rob Deer to come out of retirement maybe he could be our Julio Franco.

I think he is pretty much the white version of Kirby Puckett, only slower and not really as good at baseball.

Stairs did used to be on the "All Hair Team" when he was sporting that permed blonde mullet. I don't even think they have a name for that style, I just refer to it as the "Sid Vicious."
