I've always wondered this and I've been here awhile so I think I should know this but whatever:

Hoops, what is it that you do/how do you have these connections to all these rumors?

P.S. I'd love to have Matt Stairs back for the bench and some spot starts, especially if Ward is out for awhile.

Stairs would be a pretty good fit imho - if it were easy to get him I'd do that one in a heartbeat. I'll bet you anything the Red Sox are looking his way too, but I don't see Toronto trading to a competing team in the division.

On top of that, in the year that Rod Beck passed away, it would almost be like having him here - Stairs almost looks like he could be his brother, and I'd hazard a guess that the two of them have similar personalities and would have gotten along great.

Dempster needs another Canadian to hang out with.

Will he join him in the Hooters outfit :-&

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Count me in the camp that's not too big on the idea. No real reason, and the arguments in support are fine, I just don't like it.

(There ya go, Banedon.)

He'd be good. But what are ya gonna do trade one of floyd or ward once they are back?

Nope. The likelihood is that Ward won't be back until September. September won't be a problem because of expanded rosters, and in the playoffs both Ward and Stairs could have spots on the bench because teams don't have to carry as many pitchers.

Oh yeeeaah. I hadn't read. Ward could be out for THAT long? In that case put my in Stairs' camp.

If Ward will be out through September I have no problem with Hendry taking a shot with Stairs. I just hope Hendry has his eyes set on getting the offense some help with an impact bat.

I'd be all about this. My only concern is that it doesn't really fill any holes - it just provides us with another quality bench bat to rotate in and out of the lineup.

I'd really like to see Stairs back with the Cubs. I'd be nervous to see what it would take to get him, though. Is Toronto wanting to trade him, or are they just willing? And I assume he's a FA after this year right? would he give us a comp. pick?

Yes, please. Who cares where he plays, the more good bats the better. It's not like he'll be demanding any big playing time, and those numbers really shocked me when I saw them.

Isn't Matt Stairs more less the white version of Darryle Ward?

count me in....so long as he comes cheaply.

Except Stairs can hit HRs.

Historically, when both have gotten a decent amount of playing time they've each hit around the same number of home runs and had similar slugging percentages.

Very true, I guess I should've just specified this year. Stairs has 13 I think, and Ward has 0. I can't even recall Ward ever coming close. I love having Ward on the team, he's done a great job, but if we could land a guy who gets on base like him and can hit for some power, I think we'd have to for the right price.

I traded Alan Embree for Matt Stairs on my fantasy league. This occured a month ago, not in 1997. Stairs went berserk. He was more consistent for me than Michael Cuddyer and Nick Swisher. Stairs was legging out triples and he even stole a base. I wouldn't sign him to a 5 year deal but I'd be ecstatic if he joined the club for the stretch run. You know Griffey will get hurt crashing into the ivy in his first home game. It's inevitable.
