Because everyone in the media is dumb.

Kendall has 292 ABs this year and is OPSing .542. His on-base is lower than Jacque Jones's.

Did I mention he's on a $13M deal this year?

Cubs will be paying less than $4M though. Pirates on the hook for $5.5M which leaves 7.5M. Less than half the year is left so the Cubs are up for around $3.5M.

Screw you Hendry.

Honestly, Jason Kendall? JASON KENDALL.

He's had a decent to great OBP every year since 2001. He's been horrible this year which worries me, but otherwise what's to hate about him.

Because his OPS is lower than ARam's SLG this year. He's publicly said he doesn't try to hit for power, so for several years he's been pretty much a guarantee of a sub .700 OPS. His body is broken down from catching all these years and previous injuries, and there's nothing to get excited about defensively. This is exactly like the Cesar Izturis trade, exactly.

Except we're not giving up anything particularally significant. Not saying Kendall is good or anything, but we're not giving up Maddux.

We didn't exactly give up Greg Maddux, but the return is quite comparable, I agree.

But he's always gotten on base very well - before this year. IF he can turn it on with us, this is ok. Like I said though, I'm worried about that.

Also, don't see how this is anything at all like the Cesar trade.

Okay, aside from the fact that Bowen/Blevins wouldn't have netted us soemthing better, it's exactly the same. I was talking about the mindset that led Hendry to go after these garbage players.

Plus, Oakland is sending cash in the deal. We still don't know how much, but this is a good point. At least we aren't paying him anywhere near the full amount of his salary.

Ten times what Soto would be paid for a whole major league season to do better than Kendall is.

For those worried about a Cardinals run, we have effectively pushed them out of the race, by matching the gritty and scrappy factor (Eckstein and Kendall). The Brewers have no such player. We will win the central

I think it's just a given around here for people to hate anything and everything the Cubs do.

I'm not sure I like this deal, there's plenty to dislike. But, if he can turn it around he'd be valuable. Moreso than Bowen or Hill.

Can I get a quick overview on Blevins before I decide just how irate to get over this trade?

Absolutely horrible the past two years, and very very good this year. I'm sure our minor league experts can say more on him, but looks like a future LOOGY, at best.

He's had a big improvement in his stuff this season...low 90s FB (topping out at 95), plus change, good slider. He gets righties out as well as lefties, so a good manager would make him not be a LOOGY.

what do you expect them to say? "well, the cubs just picked up arguably the worst hitter in major league baseball."

There's a difference between reporting the trade and glorifying it's completion. Everyone I mentioned has been speaking of it in glowing terms.

Kendall has been in the top 10 in singles in his league each year for the last 7.

Awesome.

So Juan Pierre without the speed and worse at hitting?

hey, let's have our hottest hitter bunt to set things up for two absolutely terrible hitters.

We already traded for the catcher version of Izturis, so why not?!

Don't the Pirates pay most of that?

Soccer already pointed out that the Cubs are on the hook for approximately $3.5 of his contract, and that's before considering however much cash the A's will be sending with him.

I don't think you get much scrappier than two time world series champion Craig Counsell.

Awesome.

In all seriousness, he TRIES to just hit singles. He's talked about it to the media.

The bright spot would be that he's been ridiculously unlucky BABIP-wise, so maybe he can bring that up to the baseline of what Soto would've given us.

But with a much, much better OBP historically. Nearly .400 twice and over .360 once in the past five years.
