Bruce Levine says Petrick is out.

The Cubs make no sense. Gah.

I thought he looked impressive. I don't understand. Hopefully jacque will be gone in the next couple of weeks and he'll be back up.

They are just swapping two similar pitchers-one who is fresh and can pitch today for one who would be unavailable to pitch today. It's the unfortunate consequence of being a relief pitcher sometimes-if Hill goes a couple more innings yesterday, Petrick is probably not being sent to the minor leagues today.

I get the logic of the move completely, but they want a 12 man staff. They just need to bite the bullet and DFA Izturis or Jones. The next ten days will be important, and I would've liked to have Petrick's arm in the pen for them.

Exactly, Petrick did nothing wrong to get him send down, its simply a consequence of having a shortened bullpen

Just heard an update on the Score - they did verify that Cherry is at Wrigley but no announcement has been made yet as to who has been sent down.

FYI, Davis Schuster says Cherry is in the clubhouse but the Cubs haven't decided who's going down (or on the DL for that matter). It's probably Petrick but I'm just letting you know that there are two different reports on the competing local sports radio stations.

EDIT; I just heard definitively that Petrick is the move.

The Cubs want Ramirez to get regular rest as he comes back from his injury. They aren't likely going to be dropping to only 1 reserve infielder with that being the case-it's too risky and hurts flexibility on those days that Ramirez sits.

As for Jones, well there has been a lot of discussion why the Cubs don't really want to do that, or maybe even aren't allowed to do that.

If it's Petrick, I won't say I'm surprised. The kid was great yesterday and gets rewarded with a demotion. Also, Lou has been asking for a 12-man rotation for about a week now, and he's still not going to get it because Hendry refuses to just DFA Izturis.

Petrick has been DAMN good. I have no idea why one would even THINK of sending him down. I mean isn't it a point to actually make your team better? IE: Keeping the best and ridding your self of the worst?

It's been 2 appearences and he was a bit of a surprise callup to begin with. I hardly would consider it a shocking move.

I'm not going to upset if its Billy. He'll be back.

Let's not pretend Petrick is the savior of the Cubs. Up until two days ago, the highest level he had ever pitched at was AA. He has shown flashes of great pitching, but also rough spots (2 run homer in his first appearance). He has only pitched 3.2 innings in the big leagues. He is not a savior, he isn't being punished for his performance, he is a just a guy who came up and did his part, and is going back down to the minors for some more seasoning. Did anybody here really expect a guy whose record includes nothing higher than a bit of AA experience to stick around for the rest of the season?

When Petrick is a little more experienced and ready for a full time spot, he'll be back. Until then, I won't shed any tears for him.

I agree, people are talking like Petrick has been the second coming. He got a taste and if he continues to pitch well he will get a chance. Right now the Cubs are a man short in the bullpen and logistically this was an easy move to make. I think you will see some mixing and matching as needed through the all star break and when Dempster gets back you will see a more set bullpen.

At what point is burning up options going to be more painful than just eating Jones salary?

They've probably burned up the options of most of the people though. Sending Petrick down and calling Cherry up for example does nothing in the options situation, and I don't see too many other candidates who haven't been up to the majors already this year who will likely be called up. They've used an option on Cherry, Cotts, Petrick, Rapada, and Gallagher-my guess is that they will just try to stick to the first 4 of that group most of that time, so options aren't really as much of a concern anymore.

Any mention of where Petrick is headed - AA or AAA?

Guys with options tend to go down, that's life. Hendry gave Jones and eyre their contracts. Apparently the Trib has told them he has to keep them.

So Lou and Hendry may need to go forward with 23 roster spots to work with, plus Jones and Eyre. That won't be easy. That's life.

Whenever you have guys with guaranteed contracts, it's never really about equal competition. That's life.

While Petrick doens't deserve to go down, these type of bullpen moves happen all the time. Petrick will likely be back when the Cubs need another arm. Petrick wouldn't have been available today and we needed another arm. He had options, so he's back down.

I'd prefer it have been someone else, but I saw this move coming after Rich's short outing yesterday.

He's headed to Iowa so it's not all bad from his perspective. I think he'll be back this season as long as he pitches well in AAA.

Meh, guess he won't be starting this season then. :(

I agree that I'm not concerned with burning an option year on these guys, but Petrick does burn an option by going down, because he was just added to the 40 man, though the odds of that really mattering are pretty slim.

This is the biggest issue IMO. Taking quality starting pitching prospects and turning them into relievers because we went out and signed unspectacular veterans is no way to run an organization. At the very least let them continue to progress as starters to keep their value high.

Petrick was not turned as a reliever because of anything that happened at the ML level.

He was supposed to move to a minor league rotation midseason but that's not happening if he's at AAA.
