With Cherry, they could have said it's either DL or AAA. With DL, he still collects a MLB paycheck and accrues MLB service time. He was probably more than willing to accept it.

It may even have been arranged in advance when Cherry was called up. Perhaps the whole intent was to give Petrick a day's rest and have someone else fill that position for one day in case it was needed (which it was). It's not as though Cherry had pitched well enough in Iowa to actually earn his way back to the majors, so maybe it was a reward for being a good soldier and going along with the plan.

According to the story, Lou wanted Cherry to throw 3 innings yesterday but he was unable to go beyond 2 because his shoulder was bothering him. Maybe they think they can get by with 11 until the All-Star break (after all, many of us think 11 is enough anyway). Dempster is due back right after the break; he may replace a position player rather than a pitcher. At least that would buy Hendry until after the break to try to make a deal.
