HBP on a batter that didn't try to move

The ball came right at his back and was coming at about 62 mph tops. There's no reason he should move.

except for the umpire isn't supposed to award a batter the base if he makes no effort to avoid the pitch.

What are you talking about? He turned away from the pitch and it hit him square in the back. To avoid it he would have had to have jumped on the plate.

he could have walked. he could have ducked. he could have leaned forward or back. He had a ton of options because that pitch was so slow. He instead chose the part of his body it struck.

He could have caught that thing bare handed

True, he probably could have gotten out of the way, but anytime a pitch is that far inside, the batter is always awarded the base. I've never seen it not happen. If he leaned into a pitch that wasn't heading straight into the batter's box, maybe he isn't given the base...but that pitch was heading into the batter's box. I doubt any hitter in the league does what you're thinking.

I like to stay very stats oriented these days, and look at the team with the cool demeanor of an accountant going through the financials of a minor client.

This is impossible to let go, however. Rich Hill has crapped on our season because he doesn't have his crap together for the first meaningful game we're playing since about three years ago. Now we have to waste the bullpen in the first game, and it just goes downhill from here.

Thanks alot, Rich. Nice to see that you can still ruin all your potential by not having control of your emotions. You are weak and unprofessional.

Commence swinging for the fence at everything, boys.

how the hell does that crap get out?

Cause he hung a pitch and the batter hit it hard? Seriously you are comical with your excuses for Hill. I bet if Marquis had this same crap performance you would be saying alot of different stuff

what's comical is how everyone buries rich hill when he's been the team's best starter this year. I'll take a guy with a top 10 WHIP in baseball. He's not having a great game today, but the overreaction in this thread is a lot funnier than anything I've written.

Agreed on the Hill assesment. But sorry, your transcript of Soriano's post game interview earlier this week was funnier than any overreaction here could be.

Normally I don't throw in the towel after the first inning, but given how meekly the team seems to react to getting punched in the mouth (especially when it counts), metaphorically speaking, I don't have much hope for this one.

What did they look like on TV? dejected? Trying to talk?

At this point, I wonder if Lee will hit 10 homers this year.

We should make a wager on who hits the next homerun: Ryan Theriot or DLee.

I know its like this at every ballpark, but I was just in town for the Colorado series. Why do the fans go nuts on every ball hit in the air to the outfield? See Lee's at bat just now, half the crowd stood up cheering like it was a 500 foot blast.
