Which foot should you touch first base with? Trying to settle a discussion in the office. I'm sure it is can be done both ways, but what is the way you were taught.

Are we talking when you're rounding first to head to second? Because if you're trying to beat out a grounder and seriously considering messing up your steps to hit the bag with the "correct" foot - you're insane.

I was taught right foot when rounding a base, but not to do a little stutter if it happens that my left would naturally land there.

If you are talking from a 1st basemen’s perspective, it should be the foot opposite your catching hand.

Except when a left-throwing 1B holds a runner on, they stand with their right foot on the bag, which makes for an easier catch and swipe position.

Sorry for the confusion...the batter rounding first going to second, which foot should he touch first with?

Definitely the right foot, turns you toward 2nd base so your route is more direct, and you get there faster.

No. This is wrong.

Makes sense, unless you're with injury.

Is that like being with child?

Yeah, except that 100% of injuries are unplanned.

Why the left foot then?

(Yes I know this isn't first, but I don't care)

I think you should hit it with whichever foot you are comfortable with, and which ever one is going to be landing there at the time, and not worry about it.

He's right and wrong even though there was no explanation, I was always taught with the left foot as well...

When making the turn to 2B, you obviously want the "?" shaped turn, but you want to leaning and dipping your left shoulder to make that turn more sharp.

But...

The most important thing is which feels more comfortable to you, no need to break stride to round the bag. If a batter prefers the right foot, so be it.

I had a coach growing up who insisted right foot. Then in HS the coach said you can overthink these things. Just run and hit it with whatever foot was going to have the most comfortable stride. Since my HS coach was more successful of a coach, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I would have to say Right Foot as well. However, it isn't that big of a deal I don't think.

But technically it is quicker and less likely to trip over the base using the right.

I was always told the left foot was better but not to over think it. I think the left foot would be quicker since it would force you to turn faster. If using the right foot it would be easier to drift more toward the outfield as you round the base.

Seems the good people here at NSBB have been able to clear up this issue real nice for ya.

Hope all this info settles the discussion in the office. :)

It absolutely does not matter....whatever gets you to second base the the fastest.

Coaches will watch you make your turn a few times and make sure you're not wasting any steps or movement but should not recommend a certain foot over another.
