With that thread title/post and without a reference to the poll you're even speaking of, this just looks like a childish taunt to no one in particular.

For general information for those who didn't watch the game on CSN (not directed at you, you seem to know where this is from), they did some internet poll with the question, "Should Soriano and Pie bat 1st and 2nd from now on?" 94% said yes.

chilidish taunt? Its just a statement of fact.

What statistics I've seen suggest that batting order is not important so long as the team's best hitters hit near the beginning of the order. That means over the course of a game and a season, those players get more ABs. Good players getting more ABs is good.

I wouldn't complain if Lee was batting 2nd either. As long as he gets the good hitters at the top of the order, I'm not going to complain. If Pie continues to hit well and get on base well, hitting him 2nd is no problem. If he cools down, Murton is a good choice for that spot, and Theriot or DeRosa would be OK. I wouldn't even complain if he batted Lee 2nd. Soriano singles, Lee doubles, Soriano scores, sounds fine to me too.

Incidentally, I love solo homers. I love 2-run, 3-run, and 4-run homers more, but there's nothing wrong with a leadoff HR in a game. The only time Soriano is going to "leadoff" is likely to be the first inning anyway, and I'd argue that a HR at that point is great because of the psychological effect on both teams. What I don't love is putting crappy hitters in the 1 and 2 spots because "you gotta have speed" or "you gotta get your power hitters down in the order so they have more RBIs".

We have a fairly large sample size that shows Soriano hits best in the leadoff spot. We can debate the reason why and whether that "should" be true all day long, but it doesn't change the fact. The stats say Soriano should be hitting leadoff.

That is what clinches it for me. Batting order is an overrated and negligible concern. If Soriano says he feels more comfortable batting leadoff, and he's good enough to bat leadoff, might as well bat him there.

Wait, so Juan Pierre shouldn't be batting leadoff?

Its a horrendously written poll question. I saw it too. Its terribly unscientific for what should be obvious reasons.

I'd prefer to see Theriot starting at SS and batting first everyday with Alfonso batting second, Lee third, ARam 4th, but I think its a bit nitpicky on my part. I really like seeing Pie in the two hole between two of three best hitters. Sure it has its downsides, but it has its upsides too.

What I didn't like was the "regardless of stats" addendum. Well, if they both start sucking, and the stats show it, then maybe not. But if they play the way they should, then I have no problem with them at 1-2.

What drove me nuts for years with Dusty at the helm was creating line ups that had crappy hitters at the top of the line up.

Neifi Perez should never have hit at the top of the order.

With that said, Soriano is not your prototypical lead off guy. However, I'll take a premium type hitter hitting at the top of the order all day long over some weak OBP hack that shouldn't ever be in the line up, period.

A typical box score from 2005 and 2006 would have Neifi going 0-5 and Derek Lee going 2-4, with Neifi making the last out in the game. In what screwed up universe should Neifi come to the plate more often than Derrek Lee?

Soriano's OBP so far this year is .369. While that is certainly not great for a power hitter like Soriano, it's excellent OBP at the top of the order. It's also on par with his OBP last year when he hit lead off.

What you want more than anything from a top of the order hitter is a guy who doesn't make a lot of outs. Soriano currently meets that objective.
