Just curious to know if anyone else has seen a very large chip growing on Matt Murton's shoulder? I have always liked him but his overall appearance and approach seem different to me this year. I just wonder if he feels "cheated" in some way. He looks lacksidasical in the field and just almost looked pissed all the time when he is at the plate.

I know he is a favorite around here and I dont want to kill the kid, but he is either hurting or he is displaying a different attitude than I saw last year

I think a better explanation is that he's struggling to find consistency with his sparse PA, and probably pressing too much when he does get some playing time.

I just dont buy the lack of playing time being an excuse. I would think that would increase his attention to detail not lead to this casualness. And yes, I know he dropped the ball today, but it seems to me that this is not the first casual grab he has attempted

Casual? What?

Matt Murton doesn't look like he cares. It must be a Georgia thing.

Just to clarify what I was trying to say. I didnt want to jump Murton for dropping one ball today--I was saying that I have noticed, or maybe perceived is a better word, a rather lethargic and uninterested approach to catching flyballs by Murton through the start of this season.

If nobody else notices this, that is what I want to know--I am not saying I can prove it or anything, it is just a feeling I get and I wanted to see if anyone else noticed this same thing...that's all

Actually, he's just trying to make Lou look good. By playing like absolute crap, he feels he's justifying Lou's decision to rarely play him at all.

Quite a team first attitude if you ask me, sacrificing his own personal stats to make others look good.

But to answer the other question, yes, I do believe I saw him playing in khaki's and a golf shirt quite frequently, and not just on casual fridays.

I'm telling you, it's a Georgia thing. Corey didn't care, Farnsworth cared about partying it up, now Murton. Better watch out for EPatt.

Barrett will stop caring pretty soon as well.

He only cares about fighting and Derrek Lee's daughter.

You're half right. He's been trying to not hit home runs so he doesn't have to fork over the cash. Today's ball was supposed to bounce off the wall.

He doesn't care about playing defense.

You may be on to something. There used to be a day, when Barrett would punch an opposing player in the face if the Cubs were losing. So far this year he is not playing with that passion.

I thought he looked pretty good last night. Was taking a few more pitches and trying to work the count into his favor. Looked pretty solid in the field also.

I didnt see todays game. I seen he had an error and went 0 for 4.

I thought last year when he was finally just given the everyday job in June(without any competition) he really played well the rest of the season. He may be one of those guys who does better in a role like that, as opposed to having to fight for his job.

Yeah, he had an error (an easy fly that he dropped) and a misplay (ball bounced past him-this was more due to his inexperience in RF, not as much of a problem).

I think you're remembering last year a little wrong though. Murton had the fulltime job until June (through June 4th Murton had started all but 4 games of the season) When he started slumping badly, he got sat down for 6 days in a row for Nevin.

In July and August, Murton split time with Pagan-it was during these months when he was splitting time that Murton really got hot. He got more of the job in September, although he still was splitting time a little bit, and he remained hot. Murton didn't get hot though when he got the everyday job-he got hot when he lost the everyday job and starting sharing LF.

Yeah your right. I remember being upset everytime Pagan started. Maybe Murton is more of a 2nd half guy. I really aint that worried about him offensively. I think he will put up a .800 ops by seasons end and will start 100 games. I am more concerned because I dont think he is going to be a good enough RFer. I know the Cubs won the division in 84 with Moreland in Right, so its possible to win with a bad defensive RFer. I just dont think its a longterm position for him. Especially if he doesnt have an OPS over .900 to justify his defense.

My sources tell me Murton was clubbing baby seals before the game today.

Are you sure he didn't swing and miss?

Actually the baby seal wasn't in the strike zone so he kept the club on his shoulder, waiting for the seal to get into his wheelhouse so he could pop it up.

When the wind hits one of those little fluffy buggers they can really be hard to play... MM better run it out for sure.

The Cubs haven't been massacred hard enough to drive Barrett to his "BARRETT SMASH" rage. All of the loses have been too close.

Just a Southern thang:

The South? Isn't that where the black people are really lazy, and the white people are equally as lazy, but they're mad at the black people for being so lazy?

Yes, that's the South.
