For some reason, this story is giving me some serious de ja vu - hopefully it's a very short term issue. I hope the Mariners don't end up going through the same thing with King Felix that we've gone through for three years. I wouldn't wish that on any team. Well, most teams. Definitely not Seattle.

It's been a bad day for my fantasy team. My ace goes down, and Kendrick (one of two players performing to my expectations) hits the DL with a broken finger.

Everybody else combined for a .212 BA today and a single dinger...

Anyway, if Felix goes down for a while, this is horrible for baseball. He may be the single most exciting pitcher out there.

perhaps the "surpassed johan santana" label was being thrown around a bit hastily

Oh I don't think Cubs fans should be throwing rocks around in this particular glass house. After all Rich Hill with all, what, 9 career wins is better than Carlos Zambrano.

the difference being that Rich Hill has been better than Carlos Zambrano for half a season now... and Carlos Zambrano is not the best pitcher in baseball

Right. You really think anyone outside of a few Cubs fans believe this to be true? I love Rich Hill, but until I see him dominate like Z has for most of his career this is just silly.

Is Felix Hernandez the Spanish translation for Kerry Wood or Mark Prior? Please assist, I am an amateur in Spanish.

it's not really a matter of opinion. hill's been better (by quite a bit) for half a season.

When Felix doesn't pitch for 2-4 years straight then we can label him Prior and Wood.

Can we at least start calling him a wuss for not pitching through the pain?

Whether Hill or Z will be better going forward is a matter of opinion, but right now (based on about the last half of last year and a few starts this year) Hill has been better. That doesn't mean Hill is a better pitcher than Z or will be in the future (maybe so, maybe not). But for the last 1/2 season or so, he has been. I don't see why that's so controversial.

Ok well Z is younger. He has more room for improvement. :P

A little beside the point, but how exactly did he get the loss last night? He pitched 1/3 of an inning, gave up 3 ER, and the Mariners eventually lost 5-4.

Why/how was Hernandez credited with the loss?

Hernandez left with his team down, and his team never tied it up. The team would have had to tie it up or take the lead at some point to make sure Hernandez didn't get the loss, and they never did-they got down 5-0, and they closed it to 5-4 but never got it tied.

He was the pitcher of record when he left the game (because they took the lead against him). That means he gets the loss if his team never ties the game or takes the lead. It's the pitcher who is charged with the go-ahead run when the other team takes the lead for good that gets the loss. He could have left down 1-0 and his team ultimately loses 20-19, and he would still be the losing pitcher if the other team remains ahead for the entire game.

Which is one of the many reasons why W-L record is a dumb way to judge a pitcher's value.

Got it, thanks.

It's not just Cubs fans... I guess you didn't see the AP story after Hill's last start; The writer mentioned that Hill has pitched like the ace of the staff... As already mentioned, Rich has pitched better than Z for quite a while. 9 total wins isn't representative of his overall dominance since last August. Z had the highest run support of any pitcher on the 2006 staff. Whereas, Hill left some good starts with no decisions.

Hill is 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last 8 starts.

I believe that one loss was a rain-shortened complete game against the Reds.

It took Hill 10 major league starts before he got his first win last August and then he went 3-1 in September. Now as the fourth starter in the rotation, he's pitched like an ace.
