A little beside the point, but how exactly did he get the loss last night? He pitched 1/3 of an inning, gave up 3 ER, and the Mariners eventually lost 5-4.

Why/how was Hernandez credited with the loss? :oops:

 

Hernandez left with his team down, and his team never tied it up. The team would have had to tie it up or take the lead at some point to make sure Hernandez didn't get the loss, and they never did-they got down 5-0, and they closed it to 5-4 but never got it tied.

 

Which is one of the many reasons why W-L record is a dumb way to judge a pitcher's value.

 

If that is Exhibit A, Exhibit B should be Ted Lilly's loss on Sunday (1-0 to the Reds).
