The weather tomorrow is sketchy but that isn't the primary reason for the postponement. There is a big issue with short notice for fans and TV and radio programming for a national audience (including all of the affiliate stations that would have to change programming to accommodate the broadcast).

Was this a national game? I didn't notice. Teams postpone games on one day's notice all the time. I don't think that's an issue.

This was a WGN game. The issue isn't the postponement but the rescheduling. The Cubs have hundreds of affiliate stations that carry their broadcasts so allowing for the reshuffling of programming is important. Think about it, stations set their programming schedules weeks in advance (including guest interviews) it's not just a matter of the Cubs are playing so they carry the game...

An ancillary benefit is this allows the Cubs to add a Summer night game to the schedule. This is the first season that they have been allowed up to 30 night games. I believe that the addition of this game and the option to change two future Sunday night games brings the total to 29. I do know they gave up a night game to add a second night for the Police concert.

It won't be hard for the affiliates to figure out which "Home Improvement" episodes to air in place of the Cubs game. :D

Well what are they going to show now today with the Cubs game canceled on such short notice?

WGN Superstation will just show their usual Becker marathon

That's not what I'm saying... Filler programming is easy the add on is more taxing (especially for the radio stations).

The Cubs already have a scheduled off-day for Thursday, so Piniella and pitching coach Larry Rothschild decided to rearrange the rotation, moving Carlos Zambrano up to start Friday's game against Cincinnati, with Wednesday's scheduled starter, Rich Hill, moving to Saturday.

Ted Lilly will now pitch Sunday instead of Saturday, and Jason Marquis and Wade Miller will round out the homestand, starting against San Diego on Monday and Tuesday, respectively

Why would they skip Hill that would make absolutely no sense at all.
Zero chance they skip a turn for Hill; he's the closest thing the Cubs have to an automatic victory in the rotation. They may move his start back a game to keep Z on his regular schedule (like they did with Miller's first start), but they wouldn't skip over Hill completely.

EDIT: It might help if I actually read the rest of the thread before replying. :D

Why is it so important that Z be kept on his schedule? It looks like they're going to mess up all the other starter's, but Z must pitch every fifth day? Just seems odd to me.

why the hell arent they making it up tomorrow? [expletive]. Doesnt Houston have an offday too?

They'll trade an April day game on a Wednesday for a July Thursday night game 10 times out of 10.

They just dropped a value date and added a prime date.

Z struggles with extra rest. He's the team's most important pitcher. It makes perfect sense to juggle the rotation around him.

Hmm, Lilly and Hill back to back huh? I thought they separated them earlier because they didn't want two lefties back to back?

RLRLR was the rationale for the construction of the rotation but Piniella is smart; He would rather have Hill and Lilly against a team in the division instead of pushing Hill back to the Padres series.

I had planned to go grocery shopping after the Cubs game.

I can't decide it that means I need to leave now, approximately when the game would have finished, or after the game Friday.

The Cubs are ruining my life.

It didn't take Hill long to become the #2 starter....

Actually, I think you need to wait until after the makeup in July.

I guess I had better get used to ordering pizza, then.

The game has officially been postponed. Rescheduled for July 12th.

It's this stuff that OFFICIALLY pisses me off. Great. Now we get 2 off-days, and they probably rescheduled it during a long game streak with no breaks. It should have been rescheduled for tommorow. End of story. This is stupid excecutive baseball.

Well actually, if you had read the thread, July 12 is a Thursday and is the beginning of the second half of the year. The All Star break is July 9 - July 11 with the ASG on July 10. There are other games on July 12 also.

Actually, it fits better for the rest of both teams as well. If they had rescheduled it for tomorrow, it would have been the first of 14 in a row for the Cubs and the first of 11 in a row for Houston.

They rescheduled date is the first game after the All-Star Break. It will be the first of 11 for the Cubs and the first of 7 for Houston. Not to mention all of the logistical problems that would happen if the Astros have to stay an extra day in town now. It works much better both baseball and business wise to play right after the All-Star Break.

It was added to the end of the All Star Break so instead of 4 day ASB, they get 3 days off.

Not to mention, tomorrow's weather is really up in the air. They are calling for very cold, snowy conditions, and the field will be in questionable conditions from today's weather. It was the right call, both doing in early in the day, and moving it to when they did.

Woo, cant say Im disappointed about the cancellation as this means I dont have to see Marquis pitch next Friday against the Cardinals when Im there. Now it should be Lilly, who Id much rather see then Marquis.
