Not only does he get an insane contract, but he's the #1 starter?

Thanks for the warning :D Seriously though, I think the most likely option is that since he's working on his mechanics a little bit, they want to give him some extra time to throw to live batters without the supposed "flaw", and also give them more information against live hitters for them to evaluate.

I'd imagine they looked at their crop of pitchers and thought "hmm, who do we need to see the most of before we ever think of putting him in a REAL game?", and instantly said "MARQUIS".

That and usually, you don't want your top guys throwing so many innings. Teams want to give their franchise pitchers more of a chance to get in shape. Marquis isn't as valuable as Zambrano. He's not as fragile as Prior or Miller. And he's not as rich as Lilly. That's the reason he's starting. I believe Shawn Estes started the first spring game a couple years ago.

I wonder why Marquis, of all people, is starting the first game.

seriously though,

does anyone know if this game is one of those to be carried by MLB.tv? I'm not a member yet - will be in a couple days - and I can't find their spring training broadcast schedule; they say they'll show 150 SP games this year.

He also took a swing at Rothschild when he came out and suggested he throw strikes.

That was Lilly.

Marquis has already given up 5 hits, walked 2, and surrendered 4 runs.

But he's also 2-2 with a double and a run scored.

Last year he went .179/.210/.256. Don't get all excited.

That'll be good enough to hit 8th, ahead of Izzy.

That's likely to look better than his pitching stats though.

Heh, true. I was somewhat joking though. He is a good hitter for a pitcher and really athletic. He had a bad all around year last year.

Between the two of the Larry better not screw around. He'll get beat down outside the parking lot after the game.
