I'd sell that Under Armour stock if I was you.

Yeah, I read that. That may be the most idiotic thing i've ever seen.

This is really, really bad.

I mean awful. I didn't mind the "Bud Light Bleachers" at all, because it was just a name. The batters eye restaurant, eh, it's not obnoxious and you can hardly tell it's there.

But this is something new and disgusting. Part of the very reason people come to Wrigley is because it's such a gorgeous and unspoiled ballpark, and this tarnishes it significantly.

****ing pisses me off.

we all knew this was coming eventually. the ad board behind home plate was a sign of things to come.

Seriously...does that work on anyone? Is anyone convinced that this partnership is being done to "develop a winning culture"?

Would anyone be any more offended if they came out and said, "under Armor offered us $3 million. We figured, 'Hey, what the hell. We always sell out anyway, so screw it.' Thus, you get to look at ads."

I, personally, would be less offended.

You guys (some of you) are being REALLY elitist. Get over it.

To win games you have to spend money. Regardless of your ranting about the Tribune having x amount of dollars - ADVERTISING brings in the money that is spent on talent.

Seriously, just get over it.

I'd rather be a medium-sized payroll team than have to put up with eyesores in Wrigley.

WE HAVE NOT WON SINCE 1908

WE WILL STILL NOT WIN AND WE'LL HAVE A CRAPPY BALLPARK INSTEAD OF A NICE ONE AND SOME GUY WHO LIVES IN LAKE FOREST WILL HAVE STOCK THAT'S WORTH A LITTLE MORE. HOO-*******-RAY!

Well at least you can take solace in your assumed superior knowledge of all things Cub.

How are we being elitist? They're tarnishing of the best ballparks in the nation, and the one which we love.

How about spending money wisely? Are the Twins and A's high bankroll ball clubs? How about the Braves? The solution isn't just to "throw in good money after the bad".

Enough with the personal stuff.

Hey, I made a rhyme.

Don't get me wrong, I love Wrigley Field. However, if advertising helps the Cubs win they can sell advertising on every seat for all I care. It's only when they don't win that I have a problem. It's not like Wrigley Field has always been free of advertising.

Will this announcement:

Tarnesh Wrigley reputation?: probably, but not qualitatively

Make watching a game less enjoyable?: hard to say; it is still baseball, right?

Cause petty, personal attacks on NSBB, the only decent place for Cub fans?: apparently so :(

I can already say that this move has been bad . . .

From the Cubs:

CHICAGO and BALTIMORE – The Chicago Cubs and Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE:UA) today announced a partnership that includes first-ever signage on two outfield doors in left and right field at historic Wrigley Field. The signage, 7-by-12 foot paintings of Under Armour's signature logo, will be in place in time for the Cubs' 2007 home opener on Monday, April 9 vs. Houston.

“We greatly appreciate the Chicago Cubs’ history and wanted to be part of their new direction and exciting future,” said Under Armour’s VP of Brand Steve Battista. “We’re thrilled to partner with such a storied ballclub as a symbol of their strong desire to improve on-field performance while blazing new trails with the franchise.”

The deal comes on the heels of Under Armour’s recent growth on the baseball diamond, highlighted by the recent release of their first-ever line of baseball cleats. Alfonso Soriano, the highly-touted free agent signed by the Cubs in the off-season, will wear Under Armour performance batting gloves and wristbands this coming season, and is featured prominently in the Cubs’ 2007 advertising.

“The Chicago Cubs’ mission is to develop a winning culture and our partnership with Under Armour reflects that vision,” said Jay Blunk, the Cubs’ Director, Marketing and Sales. "The Cubs are committed to finding alternative and creative revenue streams to build the championship team our fans richly deserve."

The partnership also gives Under Armour, known as the originator of moisture-wicking performance apparel worn by athletes on playing fields around the world, advertising rights to the signage behind home plate in Wrigley Field, the second-oldest ballpark in the country. The Under Armour logo is also featured in the country's oldest major league stadium, Boston’s Fenway Park, where Under Armour shares space with on the Green Monster with sporting goods retailer, The Sports Authority.

If you have a problem when they don't win, you must have had a lot of problems over the years.

I don't expect much out of this team next year, and Hendry has set it up so there's a lot more money sunk into the team for years to come. I'm not going to bother spending any money going to games this season.

Maybe I'll buy a few tickets to sell to the true believers on EBay. I might as well profit.

Seriously, just tell us the real reason.

I hate marketing people. Just tell us how much money they paid you and spare us the brand synergy crap about "winning culture".

And BTW, just build a new park. Stop screwing up my cherished memories.

One of the reasons Wrigley is such a great place is that when you get to your seat, you just see baseball. No ads(signs by the bleacher entrance or behind home plate don't really affect this), no jumbotrons, just the field. Now they're making Wrigley a parody of itself. This sucks. At least it's just the simple logo painted on.
