cubs.com[/url]"]MESA, Ariz. -- The green doors tucked into the ivy in the left- and right-field bleachers of Wrigley Field will be decorated with 7-by-12 foot advertisements, touting Under Armour's signature logo.

It's the first time the Cubs have allowed any ad or sign on the outfield doors.

"The Chicago Cubs' mission is to develop a winning culture, and our partnership with Under Armour reflects that vision," said Jay Blunk, director of marketing and sales for the team. "The Cubs are committed to finding alternative and creative revenue streams to build the championship team our fans richly deserve."

.................

The partnership also gives Under Armour advertising rights to the signage behind home plate at Wrigley Field. The company is well known for it's moisture-wicking performance apparel.

Aside from the fact that they're likely going to be quite hideous, they better pay of at least half of Marquis.

While the sign behind home plate didn't really effect those watching at Wrigley, this is going to stick out significantly more so. It won't bother those watching at home for the most part, but this is definitely a huge change for those going to the games (bleacher fans excluded).

The only way this can work is if Hendry signs Z and then comes out and flat-out says the Cubs couldn't have signed Z without these ads.

Good lord, this is stupid.

if it's just that logo painted onto the wall and nothing else, it might be tolerable. as long as it's simple and not gaudy.

How much is that stupid thing behind home plate bringing in? Isnt it like 500,000 for the season? This better be bringing alot of money in.. I think its gonig to look stupid in the outfield with the ivy out there, It just dosent mix...

We'll see how much they get for it. The naming rights for the bleachers went for less than a million, but that mostly just reaches those going into the bleachers (I don't think the once-a-game mention of the Bud Light Bleachers is a huge part of it). On the other hand, the ad board behind home plate gets them about $5 million.

Thats pretty much how I feel.

It may be a necessary evil.

Agreed. If it's something like this on the other hand, Wrigley just took a big step toward losing its charm.

Seriously, who cares?

I don't get why people flip out or even care about stuff like this.

If it were up to me, they'd tear the place down and build a new retro park (with an ample supply of decent bathrooms) near the lake. Oh, and with no obstructed view seating. Plus, they wouldn't have the neighborhood (which, admittedly, is probably the best part of Wrigley) limiting their night games. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure Wrigleyville isn't a bigger factor in that whole Wrigley aura than the stadium itself.

I'm not nearly as big a Wrigley fan as I am a Cubs fan.

This is not a big deal people.

Here is your choice:

a) Solid green door, no money....

OR

b) Big door with an Under Armour ad on it, plus $$$$ that can go towards players, etc.

I'll take "b."

Rotoworld's take is pretty point-on.

As if the sight of Jason Marquis on the mound wasn't going to make Cubs fans cringe enough, now they're uglying up the ballpark to pay for him. The advertising will initially be placed on the doors in right field and left field.

?? That better just be worded badly.

Nah, it'll spread eventually, I'm sure. Anything that can't be changed due to historic preservation laws isn't safe, as I said last year when I got all pissed off about the Bud Light bleachers

Pretty much.

$$$ does not equal a good team. Cubs fans should be aware of that by now. No Marquis, no need for this, Cubs fans happy.

let's just tear wrigley down. we can probably make more money in a new park, and with all this garbage it doesn't look right anyway.

this is embarassing.

Remember when Wrigley was advertised as 'baseball pure and simple'? Now you spend $40 to enter the Bud Light bleachers, pass by the batter's eye club/restaurant, and heckle the RF who is standing next to a giant Under Armor advertisement.

Great job guys.

I'd rather they built a new ballpark than screw with the tradition of the old one. Granted, I'm not a Chicago-born or Chicago-living fan -- I've only been to Wrigley twice, including one pregame rainout -- so my perspective is a bit different.

Remember when they said it was gonna be an open dining area for anyone in the bleachers to watch the game from the batter's eye? That was a ******* laugh.
