There's always someone. Whether it be a Shawn Estes, Neifi Perez, Jose Macias, Rey Ordonez, Glendon Rusch, LaTroy Hawkins, Antonio Alfonseca, as long as I've been at NSBB there has usually be a season long hate affair with one Cub above all others. And so now I'm curious who you think will proudly step up and fill that void this year.

I'm voting Marquis.

I went with Izturis...something tells me that Marquis just might be borderline acceptable this year in the 5 spot. If so, thats a great over achievment from current expectations....plus, he hits better than Izturis.

I'm going with Marquis. First, my guess is that he'll start off on the wrong foot by choosing to wear #21. Then he'll post an ERA of around 5.00 while Guzman or Marshall is doing well in the minors. The combination of that will cause everyone to hate him.

i said dempster.

the seeds were planted last year

Dempster could be for the regular population (if he blows some saves, they'll turn on him quickly), but I think Izturis will be for NSBB. Most Cubs fans will probably like Izturis a great deal next year (because of his defense), but unless he really comes back from his injury NSBB will be all over him on his offensive production.

Izturis all the way. Marquis won't be loved, but I haven't seen anything even close to the hate Cesar is already getting for being a slightly better and much more expensive Neifi. Add that we have such a glaring hole at SS and he's doomed. Marquis can at least somewhat "blend in" given all the pitchers we have. SS is a black hole no matter who is there, leaving much more focus on those that suck it up.

Considering the immature nickname that some people have been childishly using for him ever since the trade last year, I think Izturis already has a leg up on the competition. If he has a bad enough year, though, Marquis may be able to catch up and pass him.

Among the NSBBers, I think Izturis will do it.

But among the Wrigley faithful I see the Marquis de Suck taking over quickly to be Jacque Jones'd.

Quite possibly. I was thinking more in terms of the NSBB crowd.

Marquis has a dynamite resume for the job.

Your avatar, good sir, is dynamite.

While all of the candidates are impressive, Izturis is likely to be the whipping boy here. Jones will be the one amongst casual fans because he wants to leave, and they all know Izzy drives in runs with his glove.

Marquis will be the whipping boy for the next 2 years, but after that Soriano will be the whipping for the next 6 years. He very likely will become the Cubs' Alltime Franchise Whipping Boy and maintain that distinction for the next 50 years.

i voted for Novoa, simply because I do not like Novoa at all. Wish he never donned a Cub uniform... but I think Izturis will be the whipping boy overall

I'm with IMB! The stars are aligning for a closer controversy this year with Dempster having a rough go at it at times last year and the inevitable clamoring from the fan base to let Wood pitch in the 9th

I say Ted Lilly. A fly ball pitcher at Wrigley is not a good match.

Isturis is a close second, but since there is not a clear cut sucessor in the wings, the majority of the folks here will live with him despite the fact that as said before he is a slightly better Neffi. IE; his defense will mitigate some of the hate.

Marquis will be used to pillory Hendry endlessly. That is why I think Marquis misses the #1 ranking. The Marquis hate will transfer to Hendry.

Lilly on the other hand will suffer early and not produce to his contract expectations. This will place him in a hole at NSBB with those who use every statistic they can lay their hands on to say Hendry should have signed player X.

That my friends is why I voted for Lilly.
