The Reds acquired RHP Kirk Saarloos (pronounced SAHR-lohs) and a player to be named in exchange for RHP David Shafer and a player to be named from the Oakland Athletics today.

The Reds have apparently decided to have a pitching staff consisting of Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo and 11 relievers. They intend to forgoe having 3rd, 4th and 5th starters. They instead plan on having a reliever pitch 1 inning of each game not started by Arroyo and Harang. They will then have 2 extra arms-one for matchup purposes, and then a proven closer.

Homer Bailey is better than any of our pitching prospects. By far.

So they're only missing two starters...

Kirk Saarloos has alot of movement on his pitches. Not that bad of a deal for the Reds.

He also has a good amount of suck in his game.

Hahaha

I must say, it wouldn't surprise me.

This is the first time I recall both teams giving up a PTBNL in a trade.
As soon as one team names the player the other team will name that player to be traded back. It's like hot potatoe. :D

At least they didn't have to give up two starting position players this time.

That's because no one wants Griffey.

Griffey for Jones and a prospect? I figure Griffey would be perfect. He would play very well for the first half of the year and then get hurt allowing Pie to get called up.

If they could get the Reds to pay the backloaded/deferred money that would be a great trade for the Cubs. I'd even give up one of the top pitching prospects like Marmol.

It won't happen though.

I'm curious if Griffey would move to a corner spot in the OF. How old is he now?

As a contingency they have their entire city praying for rain 5 days a week!

Bumpity-Bump.

I just read on reds.com that Cincy has offered Eddie Guardado a spring training invite with incentives if he makes the team.

Anybody know what position he plays?

This is getting too funny. They already have 20 of their 40 man roster filled up by pitchers.

What is their rotation going to be next year???

Arroyo

Harang

Milton

??? (Kyle Lohse/Kirk Saarloos/Elizardo Ramirez)

???

Also, when are they expecting Bailey to be called up, anyone have any guesses or predictions? They may be carrying 13 pitchers on their roster this next year at this rate...

Guardado was with them last year, and had to have elbow surgery. They aren't expecting him to contribute probably until August, if even then.

This is similar to the Dempster/Williamson deals that the Cubs out together the past few years.

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but the Reds are also looking into acquiring Dustin Hermanson in case Guardado isn't ready until mid-late summer.
