No, it means lets no pass up an incredible ballplayer and production in the lineup that we can ill afford to lose. Pass it up just becuase the guy probably had train-tracks on his rump at one time.

Who cares, a 1000 OPS with a .400+ OBP still counts no matter if the biggest jerk on earth is swinging the bat.

Bonds in our lineup would equal murderers row on the NL. Add him to our current mix and you may have just written your check for the postseason.

I don't care if he has to put a paper bag over his head when he bats for the shame. I want that OBP.

Not going to happen, I know, but it's because of idealistic nonsense, not a good enough reason to keep us away.

Seriously, do you really think that? The guy barely plays anymore. I want OBP too, but not at the cost of looking like an organization that will stoop to any levels.

Did McGwire equal murderer's row for the Cards in his last season? That's what Barry is now. He's McGwire, juicing his last batch to eek out a few more ABs.

Besides, I think Murt breaks out this season. Barry would take ABs away from Murt for absolute certain.

Bonds had 15 fewer PA than Murton last year. So it doesn't make much sense to say he "barely plays anymore". He had an OPS+ of 156 last year, while Big Mac had a 106 in his last year. So it doesn't make much sense to say that's what Barry is now.

The problem is when did Barry get to use his bug juice and if he's caught using it again he's out for 25 games. I think this is what the Giants and many other teams will now be thinking.

Possibly.

Obviously Barroid played more last year, but I found it interesting that he was crippled, questionable whether he was even going to be able to play at all, then suddenly he puts in 130 games. Then, he fails a drug test.

It seems pretty clear to me what's going on.

He's going to break down, just like McGwire. Just a matter of time. $15million to find out if it's with the Cubs? Hah, don't think so. I think the Gnats look like fools for giving him as much rope as they did. Don't bring that freak show to Chicago.

As I've said before, you don't have to worry or get your hopes up about the Cubs signing him. It ain't going to happen.

I can live with that. I just wondered what would the Cubs reasoning for choosing not to sign him.

Inquiring minds would like to know.

how do the giants look like fools? they got tremendous production out of him.

Back when it was still unclear what was happening, I'll give you that. But these past few years they've been gloming on to Bonds, stinking it up on the field-----really doing nothing of note as Barry becomes known as the seminal steroid cheat of all time.

I realize some people don't think that reflects badly on the organization. For me, it really does. It reflects badly on the Cubs if they knew about Sammy's use too---although I think it's a little more obscure what the Cubs might have known and when. With the Giants, it's clear. For at least the past 3 seasons, they've been fully aware of what Barry is, and they haven't shown an ounce of concern.

In my heart, if the cubs won with Barry on the team, I would mentally put an * on it.

I would become a Sox fan for a year, either Red or White, who cares, rather than root for the cubs with Barry on it. Am I a fickle fan? No, I just hate Barry that much. I am one of those boring folks who believe in fair play and winning the right way.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I'm curious what you think they should have done with him the last three years. Wasn't he in the middle of a multi-year deal at that time? It's doubtful the Giants could just release him for steroid use, since he never failed a test and the only real knowledge anyone has of his usage is leaked grand jury testimony, which they never should have known in the first place. You really can't blame them if they aren't eager to police their own players when no other team is. If they did release him, they lose a lot of money. By essentially dumping Bonds, they'd alienate about half (if not more) of their fan base. Not only that, but they'd eliminate any hope they had of competing.

hold a press conference, say something, call the governor, alert the militia...

i'll tell you what they shouldn't do, come to terms in principal for another massive amount of money on the guy

Aside from the "character" issues, which the Cubs consider, there is the little matter of a budget. Despite what the Cubs have spent, Bonds would bust the budget. And let me say it again, the Cubs are not interested, so the whole thing is moot. And as somebody else pointed out, what do you do with Murton, Floyd, Soriano, Jones, Pie?

Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay $15+ Million to a 40+ year old LF, especially for a one year. I'm glad that the Cubs weren't even interested in him, so you're correct. It is a moot point.

Murton - LF

Floyd/Jones Platoon on RF

Soriano in CF

Pie in AAA

That's how I see it.

I'd rather spend 16 million this year and the next 4-5 on Zambrano. Hendry is hopefully working on that deal, not thinking about Bonds.

Why would you platoon two lefties?

The point is indeed moot, but there's a theoretical/philosophical question here.

Would you like to have a 40-year-old Bonds on the Cubs, knowing he's a roid cheat and an amphetamine cheat, but also knowing he could boost the lineup? In short, do you forgive the sins to get the performance? Does the end justify the means?

For me, that answer is no. I think there are other ways to build a champion, Bonds hasn't shown that his presence = championships, and the distractions would outweighs the benefits to this ballclub, especially since they're short-term benefits.
