Anyone else wonder if Sosa's comeback is a selfish attempt to delay his initial HOF eligability until this whole steroids thing (hopefully for him) blows over?

All he needs is one entry into a game to delay it 2 seasons.

Not particularly. For all his faults, Sammy has always loved two things: playing baseball and being in the spotlight.

This is probably more about reaching 600 and having one last grasp at fame. I have to admit, if I were under 40 and had ANY shot of playing one more year of baseball in the majors, I'd do anything within the rules to do it. You can only play ball in the majors for so long, then it's off to retirement.

I always understood athletes who enver wanted to hang it up. I wouldn't either. The window to play pro sports is pretty short. Make it last.

I tend to agree. My (uninformed) guess is that it's primarily about reaching 600 HRs. He's cited how important it is to him in the past.

I do have to say, though, some people just need to let crap go. Yes, Sammy walked out on the team at the end of the '04 season. During a meaningless game and when everyone and their mother was feeling like crap, but yes, he walked out on us.

Other than that, he made us live through the cork incident, and the "i sneezed and hurt myself" incident. Otherwise, all he ever did was give us many, many years of enjoyment. For a lot of those being the only reason to watch The Cubs.

Sure, you can be skeptical about his success coming back, I sure am, but I get the feeling a small portion of folks are actually rooting against him. That's just low to me.

I wish him the best and hope he surprises me, and all of us.

I'd like Sammy to end his career with at least 600 and eventually repairing his ties with the Cubs organization down the line. Good for him.

He'll be back after his induction into the HoF.. Assuming he gets in as a Cub.

Ah, but when does he get into the Hall?

If he gets in there's no doubt it will be as a Cub, because that's where all his success was at. There's no other team he played for that would even remotely be a consideration (it's up to the Hall to decide what team a player goes in as, not the player's decision, so any hard feelings he might have towards the Cubs would be irrelevant).

He's going to tank. I don't know why everyone's excited to see him embarrass himself.

While you're likely right, can we at least have a wait and see attitude? While I did quote you, this is directed at people with that attitude in general, not you specifically.

I don't have particularly strong feelings about Sammy one way or the other, but heres hoping that he kept himself in baseball shape.

.274/.349/.490 28 homers book it

Where can I sign up for that bet?

I respect what he did for the Cubs, mostly. But his bat was pathetically slow in 2005, I don't think a year off will improve that either.

Trust in Rudy. Ask DeRosa how that worked out for him.

DeRosa is a lot younger, and didn't have a whole year off either.

I don't wish him any ill will, but I just don't see it being a successful return.
