Steelers to name Mike Tomlin head coach:

Steelers Defense-TM-Steelers Jan. 20 - 2:31 pm et

The Steelers have chosen former Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, 34, as their next head coach.

While an underdog pick, the Rooney's were not afraid to shake things up in an organization that had a Super Bowl hangover. Tomlin has undergone an amazingly fast rise through the coaching ranks and is regarded as a dynamic leader. Most of the Steelers staff will probably follow Ken Whisenhunt to Arizona. Tomlin runs a Cover Two defense, so Dick Lebeau and Pittsburgh's famed 3-4 defense will probably be taken apart sooner than later.

This was a false report, I guess. Pretty much everyone is denying it now.

Hmm...Seems like they may be waiting for Rivera. They'll have to wait till Feb 5th.

Interesting goings on. ESPN is reporting it's a done deal.

But I just heard Adam Schefter on NFL Network say that noone with the Steelers or Vikings are confirming anything. He thinks the Steelers may have chosen Tomlin, but are waiting until Monday to make it official.

EDIT: ESPN says sources have told them the deal is done, according to the link. They also say there is no confirmation from the Steelers or Vikes. My opinion is they're waiting until after the playoff games Sunday so as not to steal the playoff thunder and also have somewhat of a spotlight for their announcement.

Just heard on the radio that Parcells is out in Dallas.

He was fired or he stepped down?

He's retiring. Just saw it on NFL Network.

Until the Giant job opens up? I can't wait to see ESPN go back to kissing his rear again.

Parcells is done in the NFL. Or at least he should be. His act is old and no one is buying.

But he might go the broadway route. Many out of work actors find their niche there.

Well this opens up another spot that Ron Rivera could be considered for...and with the lateness of the opening, he could stand a better chance.

As far as Parcells, I'm pulling for him to replace Irvin on ESPN.

I'm hoping that Irvin and Parcells try out for Dancing with the Stars and are never heard from again after that.

I really think this was all about TO.

Jones wants to keep him. That's not acceptable to Parcells.

And that's it.

I wonder what the chances are that Mr. Chico Rivera is your next Dallas Cowboys head coach. Rivera has shown an ability to work with a system; might be a good fit for the overbearing style of Jones.

Well, at least the national media will have something they enjoy covering instead of having to write about these boring crappy Bears.

Not to veer off the thread topic, but I really don't understand how the Bears have gotten this reputation as a boring team.

Granted, it might be because I'm a Bears fan, but I find the way this team plays incredibly fun to watch. On the other hand, I didn't find the 2005 team nearly as exciting. The offense was boring, and the team just eeked out victories with their defense for the most part. This year's team, though? A big play defense (the only part of this equation that's really a constant from last year). An offense that can make the big play. A punishing, exciting RB in Benson. An unprecedented ability to run balls back on special teams. This team has completely and thoroughly dominated the opposition several times this year.

The Bears don't do it conventionally, but they seem to often break the 30 barrier in scoring and make their share of SportsCenter highlights.

I guess unless you have a 6'5" QB who throws 50 yard bombs on every play to streaking WRs, you are "boring."

To me, incessant passing is just as boring. I like all facets of the game.

I think there are a few reasons.

First of all, their most prominent hometown writer, Pierson, made that claim going into the playoffs. He actually thought the Seahawks and Chiefs were more exciting stories.

But some of it comes from the Jets game, when they beat NY with a fairly blah gameplan. Everybody decided that the only smart way for Rex to play was to be game manager Rex from that game, so they automatically hand the Bears the boring label.

And then, of course, the Bears have been known as a low scoring, field position, defense and running game team. Nobody is talking about how many points the Bears actually scored this year. Nobody will talk about how the Bears have actually average more points per game played this season than Indy (including playoffs it's 27.4 - 26.5).

It just doesn't fit into their talking points.

He has a very talented and young team. In fact, this seems to be a very inappropriate time to step down, and sounds like it was a decision based on emotions.

If I was a young coach (Rivera) I'd love that job. That team could be Super Bowl ready as soon as next year.

Parcells should be irrelevent. He's way past his prime. He's done nothing more than Wannstedt in his recent coaching stints. I think it's hysterical, and quite predicatable, that the egomaniac announced this today, and that ESPN is eating it up with a chance to talk about something they care about.
