Steelers to name Mike Tomlin head coach:

Steelers Defense-TM-Steelers Jan. 20 - 2:31 pm et

The Steelers have chosen former Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, 34, as their next head coach.

While an underdog pick, the Rooney's were not afraid to shake things up in an organization that had a Super Bowl hangover. Tomlin has undergone an amazingly fast rise through the coaching ranks and is regarded as a dynamic leader. Most of the Steelers staff will probably follow Ken Whisenhunt to Arizona. Tomlin runs a Cover Two defense, so Dick Lebeau and Pittsburgh's famed 3-4 defense will probably be taken apart sooner than later.

Wow. Sucks for Russ Grimm.

This was a false report, I guess. Pretty much everyone is denying it now.

Interesting goings on. ESPN is reporting it's a done deal.

But I just heard Adam Schefter on NFL Network say that noone with the Steelers or Vikings are confirming anything. He thinks the Steelers may have chosen Tomlin, but are waiting until Monday to make it official.

EDIT: ESPN says sources have told them the deal is done, according to the link. They also say there is no confirmation from the Steelers or Vikes. My opinion is they're waiting until after the playoff games Sunday so as not to steal the playoff thunder and also have somewhat of a spotlight for their announcement.

This hire reminds me so much of Bill Cowher, its scary. I think they made a great hire and I'm very excited. I liked Wiz, but I think this is a great choice. Its going to be fun to see how it goes.

I'm thinking Norv Turner may end up the next coach. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Turner called the plays for the Cowboys Super Bowl teams, but how hard is it to call plays with that unit?

Wow, I certainly hope that's not the case. Norv is a trainwreck as a head coach. He's 58-82 in 9 seasons.

I was thinking Jones would go with a hot, young HC he can use to bring fresh ideas to the club while still allowing himself to have a hand in the strategic on-field decisions----that's what Jerry has always wanted anyway. To be honest, I was baffled at the Parcells hire from the beginning; it was oil and water, doomed to failure.

Boers, Bernstein, Holmes, and Zaidman sounded concerned that Lovie could be going to Dallas if the Bears don't pony up.

LOL, they're such wimps. Lovie's going nowhere. Bears are about to make him a very rich man, and he loves it in Chicago.

It is a pretty interesting point to ponder, though. Lovie is from Texas and he grew up a Cowboys fan. Jerry Jones is only going to hire someone with experience and I think Smith taking the Bears to a Super Bowl in only his 3rd year would be a good match for him.

That being said, I'd be fairly sure that the Bears would pony up the cash to make sure that the Cowboys don't lure Lovie into coaching them.

Parcells should be irrelevent. He's way past his prime. He's done nothing more than Wannstedt in his recent coaching stints. I think it's hysterical, and quite predicatable, that the egomaniac announced this today, and that ESPN is eating it up with a chance to talk about something they care about.

I completely agree on all points. The man's a .500 coach since he left the Giants. No more, no less.

Lane Kiffin to take the Oakland job

Kiffin takes Raider Job

After failing to land Southern California assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian, the Oakland Raiders reached an agreement in principle on Monday to hire Trojans offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, ESPN.com has learned.

Kiffin accepted a five-year deal to be Art Shell's replacement. Late last week, Kiffin was offered the offensive coordinator job under Sarkisian. But Sarkisian turned down Oakland's offer, and the Raiders were left scrambling.

On Sunday, Raiders owner Al Davis reached out again to Kiffin, son of Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Kiffin flew to Oakland Sunday night and spent all day Monday talking to Davis. As the evening approached, negotiations for a contract started and concluded quickly.

I wonder if Kiffin will now bring in Sarkisian as his offensive coordinator as Sarkisian was going to do for Kiffin?

Risky signing for the Raiders as I don't know that Kiffin has that much experience, but it could pay off big.

Yea, I think that Cowher thing turned out pretty well. :)

Tomlin seems to be a good option, though I'll admit I was fully expecting Russ Grimm to be the next coach after Arizona grabbed Whisenhunt. Grimm would have carried on the Cowher/Steeler tradition it seems.

I like the move. Good hire Al. I also like the part about Kiffin being expected to keep Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator. Hopefully the first intelligent move of many for the Raiders this offseason.

They just said on mike and mike that the Cowboys are interested in Lovie Smith. He's from Texas and a Cowboy fan. Interesting.

I think it was more of a speculation that they'd be interested in Lovie than a report that they are interested. I think the Bears will extend Angelo and Smith this week. But if they end up trading Lovie for picks I wouldn't cry (or did the NFL stop that following the Gruden situation?). The talent on the field is more important than the head coach. And Angelo is responsible for the talent.

I would think Angelo would have a VERY tough sell PR-wise if the Bears win the Super Bowl and he doesn't want to give Lovie his payday.

I don't think it would be a matter of Jerry not wanting to give Lovie his payday. It would probably come down to whether or not the ownership would approve of a top-of-the-line head coach salary or not. I'm guessing Lovie wants something in the $5-8m range, while the Bears would prefer to pay him in the $3-5m range.

I would love to see the Cowboys go after Cowher and have to give the Steelers a big compensation package. I was hoping Miami would try that as well.

I don't think Jones will pursue Cowher. Had Parcells stayed another year until Cowher was no longer under contract, it might have been a possibility.

Vance....please let me know what happens to coach P when you find out.

Something they neglect to mention when they talk about Lovie going to Dallas is that Lovie is still under contract for this next year, right?

Good point. He's as good as gone then.

Do you think the average fan will make that differentiation? Most fans will just call the Bears cheap, and be pissed that they got rid of a Super Bowl winning coach. I just don't see them doing that...the Bears will cave.

They can call them anything they want, they are still going to come out in droves and fall head over heals for the team, especially if they end up with draft picks that help the team ASAP. But like I said, it's probably not up to Angelo, and I expect an extension for both this week.
