I don't have the words. They've basically replaced Rusch with a slightly less awful, more expensive version of himself.

That shouldnt have made me laugh as hard as it did.

I predict!!! Marquis will win the Cy Young!

Another one of these bloodys and we may win the WS.

10 AM? Getting an early start, huh?

According to the Sun Times, no deal has been completed, yet.

Despite a flurry of reports early Saturday that a deal was done, the Cubs haven't completed negotiations with free-agent right-hander Jason Marquis, though a tentative agreement could be reached today or Monday.

''There is still a long way to go,'' a source said.

I think they're waiting for Marquis to regain consciousness after he passed out when informed that Hendry was willing to give him 3/21.

Best news I've heard in awhile.

That is, of course, assuming they're negotiating vesting clauses/incentives that might make the deal worth 3/$21 (or let the Cubs off with a third of that if he sucks), rather than negotiating the last $7 mil. that would make it worth 3/$28 gauranteed.

noooo. Bloody Mary and omelete brunch on Sunday isn't abnormal in my perception of reality.

After knowing about Marquis, Suppan sure would look very nice if the Marquis deal somehow didn't get done.

Suppan

Miller/Prior

I know it probably won't happen but it looks alot better than Marquis in there (though I don't really mind the Marquis deal as much as other people, since I have faith he could revert back to a 4.50 ERA guy, which wouldn't be bad for a 4 or 5 and would probably get 11-12 million on this market).

I'd say Sullivan, who had this as a done deal @ 3/28, has alot of explaining to do if this is the case.

It's never early for a bloody when you're battling a hangover.

I'm sure it's been covered somehwere in this thread, but would Marquis keep his #21 with the Cubs? Could be interesting.

Marquis wore Nos. 38 and 51 in Atlanta before he took No. 21 in St. Louis. I don't see anything short of a no-limits cage match between Zambrano and Marquis (Zambrano wins by default when Marquis forfeits) over number 38, and I would hope they keep Sammy's 21 unofficially retired for now, so if Marquis wants one of his old numbers, he can take 51 from Mateo.

Then what will Ichiro wear?

if this is true then why is it all over cubs.com that the cubs signed marquis for 3 years?

The only thing on cubs.com I see about Marquis is littered with disclaimers about how he "reportedly" or "may have" signed his deal.

Rothschild, who worked with Marquis in Florida this off-season, was instrumental in bringing him to the Cubs. Now it will be up to Rothschild to do what former Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone and St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan couldn't—figure out a way to get Marquis to become a consistent big-league pitcher.

This whole thing is Larry's idea. I have a whole host of feelings about this, but none of them are suitable for NSBB. :x

Marquis will wear the number 7¼ to match his 2007 ERA.

They may have agreed to a deal in principle. Heck even the total value of the contract may be in the right ballpark. But the devil is in the details. This deal could look much less bad if there are incentives and vesting involved.

Wow.

How big do his cajones have to be to think he can succeed where Duncan and Leo-freakin'-Mazzone failed?

I'm not a big fan of this signing at least for the money. I understand the reasons behind it. The Cubs don't want to go into next season having to rely on Prior being healthy to fill one of the spots and Marquis has recently performed fairly well and seems healthy as a horse. But 7 mil for a guy who's periferals aren't good seems to defy logic. I know the pickings are slim out there and that Marquis may have been the only arm left, but he is a pretty big gamble considering the price being paid.

Rothschild is supposed to be a really good pitching coach. Well, we are all going to find out because he just put his reputation on the line. I hope there are option years on this thing because if Larry can't turn this guy around, that's a lot of wasted money, and the Cubs have a decent group of pitching prospects not too far away from being ready (Veal, Gallagher, Guzman, etc.), not to mention the possibility of Prior and Miller being healthy and performing better than Marquis will.

I don't like it. Smells desperate. Maybe the news on Prior and Miller isn't very good at the moment...

I'd sure like to know why Larry would be working with Marquis in the offseason in the first place. That seems weird to me.

I thought I read somewhere that Duncan had identified where Marquis was tipping off his pitches, and he wound up throwing his hands up in disgust because Marquis wouldn't work with him to get rid of the "tells."
