Another "quality" reporter: Steve Phillips on SportsCenter just said the Cubs are trying to land Lilly and Meche this week.

Thats more likely, instead of gettting at least 1 good starter we are going to get 1 mediocre and 1 sucky and over pay for both.

I know it. I'm getting that feeling when this whole thing is over Cub fans are going to feel like they've been punched in the gut.

I would rather have Meche than Lilly. At least Meche still has some potential. I think that with Lilly you know what you are getting while people rave over Meche's arm and the potential it has.

Hell, I like Whitlock. He called out Lupica on espn.com and got fired, and his stuff on AOL has been really great.

I don't know who Whitlock is, but I take it he's not very reliable.

Jason Whitlock was an extremely horrible reporter who used to write for Page 2 on ESPN.com. He's basically a fatter version of Scoop Jackson.

And of course, he hates Scoop Jackson. Looking in the mirror can get ugly from time to time.

Should we be worried about the...Brewers?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/12/05/meetings.notes/index.html

The Mariners and Dodgers have been viewed as co-favorites for Schmidt, who already has turned away the Yankees and is thought to want to remain on the West Coast. The Padres had looked into Schmidt but are probably out of that derby assuming they finalize a Maddux deal. The Cubs, who are also chasing Ted Lilly, also have shown interest.

But the real surprise team in the Schmidt derby is the Brewers. A person familiar with the talks told SI.com that Milwaukee inquired about Schmidt's willingness to come there and hasn't been told no yet so it may also make an offer. The Schmidt sweepstakes is not expected to drag on too much longer.

Interestingly, the Giants, who have money to spend, don't appear to be as aggressively pursuing Schmidt as the others.

oooooh, they just had to throw that comment in there didn't they. someone at SI wants to fan some rumors that Schmitty isn't all he's cracked up to be.

All I know about Jason Whitlock is that he once wrote a column where he called former Indiana basketball coach Mike Davis a "coaching genius." His credibility is kind of a non-starter for me.

I'm pretty certain he also wrote a piece about Mike Davis' undoing and his refusal to respect the significance of emphasizing in-state recruiting. Every columnist has his/her overly biased opinion rants, but I liked reading the majority of his work.

If the Cubs can't get Schmidt, I hope they get pitching through a trade rather than 4 years and $40 million on some mediocre #4 starter. Trade for Jennings, Westbrook, or somebody that would put up the same numbers for less money and/or years. I'm starting to believe that some of our young pitchers along with Cotts might put up comparable numbers to Meche, Lilly, etc.

I havent heard this anywhere else.

That's because not even Hendry would be stupid enough to pay $20 a year for Schmidt.

How is 4/60 20 a year? It averages out to 15.
