Count me in on this one - I'm a Jew for Church.

It's funny that you mention that, I heard or read somewhere (I can remember where) that Church is very religious and use to openly proselytize in the clubhouse.

Don't know if it is true.

I believe I read that on this bd.

As far as I am concerend he can erect a house of worship next to the Cubby Bear and carry out the stages of the cross so long as he puts up a 900 OPS.

Since we don't have a SS that can hit worth squat, why not move Barrett to SS? That would be on par with putting Soriano at 2nd

no it wouldn't.

Maybe he'd be a better fit on the Rockies then...

Wow, this is certainly interesting

The Washington Nationals suspended a volunteer chaplain and distributed an apology from outfielder Ryan Church yesterday, two days after Church was quoted in a front-page Post article as suggesting that Jews are headed for eternal damnation.

It continues

An article in Sunday's paper about Baseball Chapel quoted Church as saying that he had turned to Moeller for advice about his former girlfriend, who was Jewish. "I said, like, Jewish people, they don't believe in Jesus. Does that mean they're doomed? Jon nodded, like, that's what it meant. My ex-girlfriend! I was like, man, if they only knew. Other religions don't know any better. It's up to us to spread the word," Church said.

Interesting isn't the word I'd use.

Man, that's disturbingly irresponsible. How could he date a Jew?

I kid I kid. He sounds like the guy from Bull Durham, terribly immature and naive. His story sounds like the chaplain was leading him along to talk like this.

If he's somebody that constantly gets on his teammates about their religion, he could be pretty divisive. He doesn't sound like somebody you'd want to spend much time with, but I'd say that's probably true of lots of players.

Thing is, by the time you are 27 you should know better.

"Alex, I'll take baseball players who appear to be dumb as stumps for $200..."

I knew I read that somewhere. Good find.

Maybe he's wised up by now.

Ryno Rules, your little joke may have been closer to the truth then we both thought.

Athletic ability= umlimited potential

IQ= not so much

He might want to remember what has gotten him this far in the game, and then realize what appears to be now holding him back.

Just shut up and play.

Ha. Doesn't sound like he's the kind of guy you want in your clubhouse.

Then again, it would fantastic if he told Piniella that his Hispanic heritage guarantees him a trip to Hell. It would be Dibble redux.

Anyone think the Cubs could find a way to get Church AND Kearns without giving up J Jones? Play Church in center until Pie is ready and platoon Kearns/Jones in right. Obtain pitching via FA.

ok....my bad. I erased my post, then.

Actually, gooney...the article vance did, was from MLB.com, and the page I posted was from the Washington Post, which LISTS the Cubs as potential suitor for Church. Same topic, but generally a different take.

Didn't see this update on Church anywhere:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/04/AR2006120401507.html

But as baseball's winter meetings began Monday, the Nationals were trying to drum up a market for Church, hoping to find a team willing to part with a prospect -- preferably a pitcher -- in return for the 28-year-old who has only 527 major league at-bats. Potential suitors include Detroit, Pittsburgh, Houston and the Chicago Cubs.

I think that's the same thing Vance posted this morning.

Lord God, bring thy Church to me.

And the Lord reach down and tells the unsuspected Cub fan,

"My will be done."

Then the Lord went to the top of the Sears building and screams, "I am Bruce Alm----I mean I am Lord Almighty." He puts his shades back on an disappeared into the night.

Leaving the unsuspecting Cub fan, continue to think about Ryan Church.
