Ultimately I think Grossman is the best option, but I think he could use one week off to regroup. I start Griese. If Grossman does start, I have him on a short leash. Lately he has been downright gross, man.

Tough call, but I don't think you can make the switch to Griese right now. What they need to do is keep Grossman in check. Don't even give him the option of making dumb plays. Call for simple routes, and safe dump off passes. Let him get his confidence back that way. Seems to me like he's out there trying to win the crowd back with every throw, and he's taking bad chances and making bad choices to do so. The defense will keep you in it, so stick with Grossman and hope he gets his September form back.

Grossman, although if you make the switch, it has to be for the rest of the season including playoffs. That means you have to do it asap so Griese can get a rhythm with the receivers.

They need to make sure that Grossman doesn't throw any more interceptions, and I can't think of a better time to do that than now. You have to re-work the game plan, and we have time and a great QB to do it with.

Starting Griese would be folly.

I say keep Grossman out there. I also think that if you are gonna completely dumb down the offense and put only short passes in there, then you might as well go to Griese. That is more of Griese's strength than Grossman's.

If you are gonna limit the offense, might as go with the guy who is limited in talent.

1 more game for Grossman. Must put a QB rating of over 85 to keep the job. Go.

I definitely would not use such a threshold for keeping the job.

Grossman should HAVE to be good this week to keep the job. Bad Rex = Early playoff exit for the Bears.

I'm becoming less and less convinced that the good Rex was anything but a flash in the pan.

I agree he has to be good, but I don't see how using QB rating as the determining factor makes any sense. What if he throws a meaningless hail mary int before half that costs him the rating but otherwise has a good game? Or what if the INT is a WR's fault?

Sorry, I wasn't advocating the QB rating thing, just saying he has to be good.

Another 0 TD and 2-3 INT game and Rex needs to be holding a clipboard for the rest of the year.

QB rating is a flawed tool, but it does take into account a lot of what the QB needs to do to be successful. I was using it more to indicate that Rex has to have, what I think, is an above average game. An 85 rating would classify as a hair above average, in my opinion.

The Bears are in a position where if they make a move, they should do it by the end of the next game or not at all. If they have homefield locked up, I doubt the regulars will see any signifigant work in the last game. That means they would have only 2 games to get Griese ready for playoff action. While I do think that Griese will be able to get acclimated quickly, I'd still like him to have as much time as possible to get ready. That being said, I think it would require a better than average game to keep Rex as the QB.

Edit: I'd also like to add that, this isn't what I think Lovie will do, it's what I would do.

Preface: I have not liked Grossman from the start. I found his accuracy lacking in comparison to QBs such as Jim Miller and Chris Chandler, and do not believe that his gunslinger attitude goes well with the fact that he will often miss by quite a large margin. I was shocked to see him actually making accurate passes at the beginning of this year, or even stay on his feet for more than two quarters. I did not begin to actually believe in him until after the Bills game. Indeed, I have been a fan of Kyle Orton, since I saw him make passes that were accurate, with the exception that they were almost always 6 inches or so too high, and believe firmly that he would have been a far superior quarterback last year if Justin Gage hadn't been allowing the triple-coverage of Moose.

All that said, I would like to see Griese and Orton flash their stuff in these next four games; Griese we know nothing about, and his job was to be the starter if Grossman couldn't handle it. He needs the reps. Orton, I personally would like to see in this system, with not-JustinGage at WO, an expanded playbook, and an extra year in the system under his belt. He has more pocket presence and, against better teams, did not give up as many interceptions in his playing time as Grossman already has this year.

PS: Apologies, had to get that . . . small rant off my chest.

I can't believe people still believe Orton is a viable option. He made as many mistakes as Grossman without even having the freedom of making mistakes.

Rookies are expected to make mistakes. Especially when transferring from a college shotgun offense to an NFL system which believes the shotgun is as much of a stain on society as a drunk nude at a Victorian funeral. 4th years, injured or no, are not supposed to be making those mistakes - especially when they've had more time to practice in a system and it is not 'new' to them that year. Now one might consider that the error of the coaches, as it was in the case of a certain Harrington who is now winning games in Miami. Although given what Lovie has done so far, I very sincerely doubt that is the case here.

I said it last year and will continue to say that Orton has a better shot at succeeding in the NFL than Rex *cough*McNown*cough* Grossman until proved either wrong or right. And right now, evidence seems to be on my side - Grossman has collapsed, while Orton was pretty consistent over the course of the year.

yeah, he was consistent, as in consistently bad. He had the worst quarterback rating in the entire NFL. He was considerably worse than Brooks Bollinger and Kyle Boller, for God's sakes.
