One player who is set is outfielder Matt Murton. Soriano is expected to take over right field, and Murton will see plenty of playing time, Hendry said.

"I'm very happy with Murton and have no intention of trading him," Hendry said of the young outfielder, who hit .297 in his first full big-league season with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs. "I think Murton is going to be a quality player.

"I'd like to augment the outfield situation with some left-handed help, but not in any way is that a negative thought process toward Matt," Hendry added. "We're obviously a little too right-handed now. Hopefully, we can add some left-handed help, whether it be in the outfield or off the bench. There's absolutely no negatives to Murton. We all feel his better days are ahead of him, and he's got a chance to be a really, really good player. I don't plan on doing anything but giving him a chance to play a lot."

Doesn't mean Murton is untouchable. I'm sure he could be had for the right price.

That endorsement by Hendry certainly improves his trade value, no?

And a pretty cool/worthless note: Todd Walker's kid dances at my wife's studio.

Trivia: the Cubs had three players in the top 8 in groundball percentage last year.

#3 Matt Murton

#4 Jacque Jones

#8 Mr. 4-3 himself, Juan Pierre

Also in the top 50: Ronny Cedeno and Mark Derosa.

/recalls hendry talking about sosa in 05'

im just sayin...

What, when he said "I'm preparing as though Sosa will be out right fielder"? Not even close to the same thing.

If this is true, and I'm inclined to believe that it is, it's a very good thing. Murton needs to stay and start, and get lots of PT.

Very very encouraging news. Even more encouraging now that it alludes to the impending departure of Jacque Jones. Adios Jacque Jones, hola Jason Jennings...... or Jake Westbrook..... or some other pitcher he'll likely be packaged for

Agreed.

Hendry WANTED to get rid of Sosa in 05. In the Nomar deal, he had the CAJONES to have Boston "throw" Murton into the deal with Nomar. So we KNOW, that Murton---since the day he was acquire---has been a "Hendry guy" and you know Hendry isn't going to trade "one of his guys" unless it was an offer he SIMPLY couldn't refused, and it made the Cubs a better team.

So, I agree the Sosa and Murton statement are about as different as night and day.

Another big difference between the two statements, is that he said he believes Murtons best days are ahead of him. That obviously wasn't even close the the case with Sammy. Hell, we would have been happy to get half of his best year had we kept him.

I'd love to see Walker back in Chicago.

I'm just glad to see Hendry talking his players up these days, rather than dragging them down.

I think it sounds like he wants to platoon Murton. I hope not.

Looks like you hit the nail on the head. Found this in the Daily Southtown, from Jeff Vorva:

Hendry said that even if the Cubs sign a left-handed-hitting outfielder such as Lofton or Floyd, left fielder Matt Murton would still be in their plans, even if his playing time is reduced.

"I'm very happy with Murton. I have no intention of trading Murton," Hendry said. "I think Murton is a quality player. I would like to augment the left-field situation with some left-handed help. Not in any way is that a negative thought process toward Matt. It's trying to make us a better club.

"We're obviously a little too right-handed right now. I'm hoping we can add some left-handed help, whether it's from the outfield or off the bench."

Hendry is pretty clear that he isn't looking at Murton as a full time player next year.

It's worth noting this from 2006:

Murton v. RHP: .295/.356/.426/.782

Floyd v. RHP: .266/.342/.423/.765 (though his 3-year splits are far superior to this line)

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, bringing in Floyd as a fourth OF is okay with me (at the right price), but I'm not assuming he'll vastly out produce Murton v. RHP.
