Typical dumb Cub luck. The one year there is a horrendous free agent class, the Trib Co. and Jim Hendry decide they are going to spend money like drunken sailors.

4 years for Ted Lilly? yikes. Too bad there aren't some really good free agents out there for Hendry to overspend on.

True, that said though, I'll take Ted Lilly for a #4, or maybe a #3 over the likes of Gooz, Marmol, or Mateo any day of the week. He might be overpaid, but he is still an improvement.

It's not our money, so if the Trib wants to spend it then let 'em. Lord knows we aren't going to improve from that steaming pile of crap known as the Cubs farm system.

I don't care if the cubs spend the money either, what I do care about is HOW the cubs spend the money. For example, Gooz/Marmol + Lugo + Floyd>>>> Lilly + Izturis.

I would agree, but I can't say I'd agree with counting on Gooz/Marmol to effectively fill a rotation slot all year.

not that I think Hendry's thinking is right regarding Izuris, but I agree. 17M in players is better than 13M in players. of course your calculation also assumes being able to get rid of Izturis, so it's actually 21M in players v. 13M in players.

Chicago Tribune[/url]"]

The Cubs have made free-agent left-hander Ted Lilly their priority at the upcoming winter meetings and already have an offer on the table.

Lilly, who is seeking at least a four-year deal for around $40 million, is being pursued by Toronto, the New York Yankees, San Francisco and, perhaps, Baltimore.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry declined comment but sources confirmed he has made a four-year offer.

"We've had an offer [from Chicago], and we're considering coming back with another counter offer," Lilly's agent, Larry O'Brien, told MLB.com on Friday. "I'm planning on meeting with Jim Hendry down at the winter meetings in Orlando next week, but we're also going to be meeting with [Toronto GM] J.P. Ricciardi."

Lilly, 29, is considered to be at the top of the second tier of free-agent pitchers, behind starters Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt. He would fit into the No. 2 slot in the Cubs' rotation behind Carlos Zambrano and would give them two lefties, along with Rich Hill.

I was also told that Levine on his show this morning said Hendry arrives in Orlando today and will meet with Lilly's agent tonight or tomorrow and a deal could be done in a couple days. It sounds like this one is probably happening.

I wouldn't mind Lilly if we get Schmidt too. That doesn't appear likely, though, We should sign Schmidt first if we sign both so that we don't increase the marke for our own signing.

i know this comparision doesnt make sense... but... who would you rather have and who do you think is better.... Suppan or Lilly..?

Here's the latest info about Ted Lilly from Bruce Miles in the Sunday Daily Herald.

Reports this weekend have had the Cubs making an offer to Lilly, who was 15-13 with a 4.31 ERA this year for the Toronto Blue Jays. However, Cubs sources over the weekend talked in terms of only “parameters” being discussed with Lilly, who gave up 81 walks, fourth worst in the AL.

Trot Nixon is also discussed in the article.

one day Bruce explicitly says Nixon has not been mentioned in Cub circles, a couple days later he is lobbying for him in his article.

what's your motivation here Bruce? do you think your articles may influence Hendry or are you just trying to float fodder for discussion??

Why on earth would we want Nixon? He hasn't done anything that someone like Matt Murton hasn't done, and Murton is 1/20th cost and 7 years younger. Some decent kid from the system could do the same thing Trot could do.

I think it's tied into the rumor that Jones will be dealt, the 'need' for a lefty bat and other nuances needed to round out this team. he'd be looked at as probably a fourth outfielder.

I disagree that some kid from the system could step in and do what he does. not the Cubs farm system anyway.

His last two seasons he was .275, 13hr, 67rbi and then .268, 8hr, 52 rbi. That's pretty mediocre for someone paid 7.5 mil.

If we are going after a free agent left handed outfield bat for 4th outfielder, I think we should look at David Delucci. His last salary only paid him 950k a year. Last year he hit .292, 13hr, 39 rbi in only 260 ab's.

Ted Lilly getting 4/40 from the Cubs would make me even happier that they gave away Ricky Nolasco for a overrated rental player that they inexplicably held onto at the trading deadline.
