Perhaps Schmidt really does want to stay on the west coast and pitch for Seattle or even the Dodgers. And if Zito is intent on going east or maybe Texas, Lilly is our next best option, no?

Willis is available in a trade.

Petitte is still out there.

For cost/performance, I'll still take Lilly.

Agreed. Willis would cost too much in terms of prospects IMO, and he's overrated to boot. Petitte is coming off arm injury and was pretty bad last year.

Agent Larry O'Brien said the Cubs have offered free agent Ted Lilly a four-year deal.

"We've had an offer [from Chicago], and we're considering coming back with another counter offer," O'Brien told MLB.com on Friday. "I'm planning on meeting with [Cubs general manager] Jim Hendry down at the winter meetings in Orlando next week, but we're also going to be meeting with [Toronto general manager] J.P. Ricciardi." O'Brien also intends to discuss Lilly with the Yankees, Orioles, Rangers and Giants. Dec. 1 - 7:24 pm et

4 years...Wonder how much? Counter offer??? he better not want like 12 or 13 mil a year

4/37 is the figure being thrown around.

Any chance Hendry will still go for Schmidt? The difference between

Z

Schmidt

Prior/Miller

Hill

Lilly

and

Z

Prior/Miller

Hill

Lilly

Jennings/Westbrook

is humongous, and we won't contend with the latter without significantly improving our offense (no, not Lgo for CF... POWER BAT)

While #1 is obviously most preferable, the 2nd rotation still isn't that bad, although I might be in the minority on that. Both are good enough improvements off of are previous staff for me. Having Lilly and Jennings/Westbrook (in the second staff) is alot better than Marmol and Mateo. Also, I'm not sure why Prior/Miller are penciled in as the number 3 starter and the number 2 starter. Let's just keep them at 5.

Praying Prior's healthy. Miller was an afterthought.

The thing is though that we could get worse than Lilly. It's debatable over whether Meche and Padilla are better or worse, but I'm sure Hendry'd be able to find a starter to trade for/sign that's worse than Lilly. Also, there may be the possibility that Schmidt WILL NOT leave west coast under any cicumstances. If this is the case, then you can't blame Hendry for not singing him or driving up the market for other teams. (Not us because our other starter would come through a trade).

You're right.

Z

Lilly

Hill

Westbrook

Miller

won't contend in the NL central at all next year, with.

Soriano

Murton

Lee

You can roll your eyes all you want. But that team is maybe a .500 team. If everything breaks right they could contend for the division. But with a top 5 payroll I expect more.

First of all, I didn't mean NL Central. I meant World Series contender. Also, are you expecting to only give up Dempster and prospects for Westbrook? If that were the case, my perspective would change. I assumed we'd have to give up someone good (i.e. starting position player, as we won't deal a starting pitcher).

My guess is slightly above 500 with everyone healthy, 84 wins or so. Schmidt over Westbrook/Jennings would probably add another 5. You can't get into the playoffs with 83 wins every year.

One positive about Jennings is that he will probably be a Type A FA next offseason and will net us good compensation picks.

If we traded for him, we would probably extend him.

I would hope so.

Well after one good year preceeded by 3 bad years we might give him 136M.

Why is the majority of everyone so high on Ted Lilly?

He's better than Gil Meche.

Ted Lilly is not a good pitcher. And how is he a better option than Gil Meche?
