A hall-of-fame induction 5 years after his retirement.

nope, not even then

Retired number?

Cubs won't retire his number unless he gets into the hall of fame. They only retired Santo's because it was (is) looking like that will happen posthoumously (sp?)

I still love me some Sammy!

Me too.

I remember when Sammy came to Jackson for his rehab assignment. For the record, some of the stories that circulated about him being a jerk on that assignment couldn't have been any further from the truth.

a good start would be coming clean on being a fraud with regards to corking his bat and taking steriods.

It's too late now for that to do him any good. Apologies must be immediate and sincere. Look at Pete Rose, for years people said "If he'd just admit it..." then once he did he was villified for not doing it sooner.

By admitting corking his bat or taking steroids he betrays the faith of those that have supported him.

What will help Sosa is time. When talk of steroids eventually goes away, he will be accepted again. No one cares that he corked his bat.

Pete Rose admitting he did it was not the reason people villified him. It was because he used the admission as a way to make money in the form of a book. The apology was incredibly self-serving, and that did not go over well with the public.

Why should Sosa have to admit to using steriods?

Imagine if you were accused of "coping a feel" (1st degree sexual assult) but didnt' do it.

Now imagine if the Cops said to you "just admit it and we'll go easy on you".

Would you do it?

Sosa has never been caught with steriods. To my knowledge no one has come forward to say Sammy did steriods. If he is as big a jerk as people making him out to be, I'd imagine someone would have come forward by now.

Sammy was a malnurished kid when he came up and packed on muscle every year. There is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary about his growth.

Now I'm not saying Sammy is clean, I don't know that for sure. But I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don't really put much stock in liking/disliking a player because of steroid allegations. If they are found guilty, like Bonds, Giambi, Palmeiro - it affects my respect for them.

I think Sammy's problem is that he was exposed as a pompous prima-donna who was not a good clubhouse presence. How would we, as fans, really ever know what goes on in the clubhouse?

If Sammy had a problem with Dusty Baker - that's fine. I still love Sammy Sosa for what he has done - which is bring great joy to Cub fans for 13 years. The rapid drop in production did suck, and his ugly departure was the worst - but if Sammy would have a slice of humble pie and do something to prove to us that he doesn't feel he is owed the "Cub fans love/respect" on a silver platter, I think it would help the situation.

I haven't lived in Chicago for about 18 months, but I never had the impression that Sammy hate was based on steroid allegations whatsoever. There were so many other reasons to hate him

Its funny because it seems to me, based on a very informal and unscientific poll that the closer you are to Chicago, the more likely to you are to not like Sammy.

Personally, I liked him when he was a Cub (although I was never a 'shipper) and like him just as much now.

If Sammy were to take me to a Cub weekend series, buy me dinner in any restaurant I want in Chicago for all 3 nights and then fly my family to Italy/Europe on an all expenses paid vacation for a month, I'd love him.
