Plus don't the Sox have 40 days to negotiate with Matsuzaka? Schmidt isn't going to wait that long before signing.

30 days I believe soccer. When is the offering arbitration deadline? Or has that passed? I don't see him signing before then.

and we're what 5-6(?) days into that, BoSox gotta have the deal done b4 x-mas(re3ally earlier, but i dont know the exact dates), i can see him waiting that long

If the Cubs sign Schmidt, I'm not certain we'd even need to acquire another pitcher.

Zambrano and Schmidt would top the rotation. That would be as good as any team's 1-2.

Hill would be at number three. While there is some questions about him, he should do ok there. Furthermore, even if he's below what is normally expected of a 3, the ability of our 1-2 would cover for some deficiencies.

For the fourth spot, Prior/Miller would be ok. If both are healthy and productive, the rotation is complete. If Prior returns to 2003-2004 form, then we have three aces with a decent four in Hill with Miller in the fifth spot.

For the fifth spot, I'd use Marshall. The other arms of Marmol, Mateo, and Guzman create some depth if Marshall suffers injury or struggles.

Schmidt makes the top so much better, the Cubs could afford more gambles in the lower half. If instead of Schmidt, we end up with Padilla or Meche or another second tier guy, a second pitcher would be needed because we wouldn't have the strength at the top.

Don't forget Cotts, hes an option as well. And I would very much like Heilman. The mets don't value him appropriately. Given the fact that we are loading up on starters and "not counting" on Miller and Prior gives additional value to some one like Heilman who has great success in an ML pen should one of those guys get healthy and productive enough to knock him out of the rotation.

Either way, who is our GM and what did he do with Jim Hendry.

That Carlos ZanRambo avatar someone has might fit better with Hendry now. He's taking no prisoners at this point.

Muskat doesn't think the Cubs are after Schmidt. :(

Who are some of the starting pitchers the Cubs are looking at? I know they must be talking about Jason Schmidt and Barry Zito. Do you think they'll sign either of the two?

-- Mike T., Joliet, Ill.

Actually, I don't think Schmidt or Zito are on the Cubs' front burners. The team is probably looking more at what's being called the "second tier" of free agents, which includes guys like righty Gil Meche (11-8, 4.48 ERA with Seattle) and lefty Ted Lilly (15-13, 4.31 ERA with Toronto). The Cubs also may get involved in the bidding for Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa, and we'll know the results on Nov. 27. Igawa was 14-9 with a 2.97 ERA in Japan, and struck out 194 to tie for the Central League lead. And the Cubs are likely talking to other teams about possible trades. Who? Wish I knew. Right now, the rotation is Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill and a lot of question marks.

From what I can ascertain, Muskat is not a very good "beat writer". Rarely has she come up with insider knowledge regarding the direction the Cubs are going to take. It looks like she is taking info from various other sources and turning them into her own analysis.

True. And according to Bruce, she's not very high on the list of writers that have access to Hendry.

Muskat also never even offhandedly mentioned an interest in Soriano.

Her opinion means about as much as mlbtraderumors.com's at this point.

no way. mlbtraderumors at least occasionally cites an actual source.

And that's why I don't bother going to cubs.com for information anymore.

I dont want to remind people, but Mark Prior, Glendon Rusch, Angel Guzman, Jerome Williams, Les Walrond. Jae Kuk Ryu, Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol and Juan Mateo combined for 60 starts last season. They gave up 258 runs in 328 innings, an ERA over seven.

Her "analysis" is more opinion based then most others. Atleast respective reporters atleast "quote sources" whereas Muskat quote her own opinion as source. And that source isn't very reliable.

Thanks, neuby! I was hoping someone else might have mentioned it.

I'm all for adding Schmidt and trading for Westbrook as starters. I think Lou was quoted as wanting 3 more starting pitchers. :)

Schmidt and Westbrook would be awesome. I would be more than satisfied going into the season with this rotation:

Zambrano-Schmidt-Westbrook-Hill-Miller/Prior.

If Prior can return back to form (2003) and Hill can continue to pitch how he did last year, then we'll have the best rotation in baseball. Trade Izturis, Dempster, and possibly Eyre and sign Lugo.

1) Soriano

2) Lugo

3) Lee

4) ARam

5) Barrett

6) Murton

7) Jones

8 ) DeRosa

Not bad...I'd prefer Lugo leading off with Murton 2nd, Soriano 5th and Barrett 6th, but I think the Cubs promised Soriano he could leadoff.

Please sign Schmidt!

Let's just say that Miller and Piror can't pitch, who of the young guys is ready for his chance to step up? Marshall, Maeto (sp) who else?

cubs offer schmidt 45/3 according to bruce levine and this quote:

"Jason Schmidt.... Bruce Levine on ESPN 1000 in Chicago reported on Monday the Cubs have offered Schmidt a 3-year, $45 million dollar contract. Levine said the Cubs are not interested in signing Barry Zito. And mentioned the fact free agents will want to come to Chicago after the signing of Soriano."

Sweet Holy Moses, do my eyes deceive me? Is this a dream? He'd be nuts not to say "yes" to 15 per year!

We appreciate you resignation more than ever, Mr. MacPhail.

EDIT: And the more I see her, the more I believe that Muskat is nothing more than a tool of the org used to diminish expectations. "They are talking trade. I wish I knew with who." Nice job of reporting there, Carrie. Its a sort of "agent of the system" thing, for you Matrix fans.

if this is true, well I guess we should be pulling out the alcohol soon enough!

who else would you guys like to land if we get schmidt, pitching wise?

Posted

3/45? He's got to take it.

I'm going to say it again. How on earth did Hendry go from "slumping Neifi" to "Jordan in the 4th"? Has to be MacPhail...
