Man I hope this isn't true. Schmidt was a must-sign IMO.

Well, maybe we can make it up with Meche/Wolf/Lily or a trade.

One of those three and Westbrook would suffice, but Schmidt would give us a solid #2. If we have a rotation of:

Z

Hill

Westbrook

Meche/Wolf/Lilly

Miller/Prior

We have one proven #1 and four #3s at the very best. If we had Schmidt, we'd have a proven ace, a solid #2, and three #3s at the very best. Big difference there.

I think at best, Hill could prove to be a top of the rotation starter. At the very best. Otherwise I agree. I think we'd need to make a run at another bat if we don't get Schmidt though.

I agree with everything you said, Hill could finally have a huge season. He showed flashes last season of being a stud. If we don't get Schmidt, we HAVE to sign Lugo for SS, move Izturis+Eyre/Ohman out for Westbrook, and sign Meche/Lilly/Wolf, we have a decent rotation and a very solid batting order. With our bullpen looking impressive like it does, that could be a very scary team in the NL Central.

I'll be happy with Hendry if he gets two of Igawa/Lilly/Westbrook. I think there's a better chance of that happening than signing Schmidt. Those three are very solid rotation additions IMO.

...And sign Lugo of course. If JH is really opening up the pocketbook getting that done would finish the offseason for me. Is it realistic?

I havent seen any other sites mention it....I'm going to guess its somebody making stuff up.

Yea, the Dodger forums haven't mentioned it either.

It's being reported on WSCR here, by the usually fairly reliable Ralph Barbieri. I believe he mentioned Olney as a source, but I wouldn't swear to it. Might not be true, of course, but the stuff I hear on Barbieri's show is usually pretty solid.

I thought you're in SF?? And did WSCR break out of Blackhawks play-by-play to allow Ralph Whatever-his-name-is to discuss Jason Schmidt?

EDIT: Olney doesn't work for WSCR either, he works for ESPN which would be WMVP.

EDIT #2: Barbieri works in SF sports radio.

Yup. Shady.

I just browsed Olney's blog, and among the things on Schmidt was nothing about the Dodgers except something a fan wrote in, "signing Lee and Schmidt would make sense to me."

He said he thought the Mariners would end up with Schmidt.

San Fran radio station call letters would begin with a K. Are you getting the station ID right?

Only if Seattle convinces that the rumors of them "shopping" Beltre and Sexson are just that...."rumors." If Seatte can do that, then yeah...Seattle is guarantee to sign Schmidt, but I don't know if Seattle can make that kind of "promise", tho.

LOL! Sorry, brainfart - I meant KNBR 680. Too much time browsing these boards, I guess. It was during his show this afternoon, with what's his name (the tennis/baseball/hockey guy) subbing for Tolbert.

If we fail to get Schmidt, but manage to trade for Westbrook, what free agent starting pitcher would you guys like to get? Meche, Wolf, Lilly, Bautista, Marquis and Padilla are the names I've heard thrown around.

First, I would rather trade for Heilman that get any of those starters, but if we can't Padilla is way ahead of all of those you mentioned. Lilly walks a lot of guys and gives up the long ball...we've seen enough of that lately.
