I don't understand why we're gambling on the 34 year old Floyd coming off of injury to return to his splits against RHP rather than gamble on Murton(who put up very good minor league numbers against primarily RHP) coming close to repeating his .338/.398/.530(~165 PA's) line against RHP from the second half.

I just want to get a RH platoon partner for Jacque in CF and call the OF done.

Yep. Heck, I'd still put Soriano in CF and get a guy like Craig Wilson to platoon in RF with Jones.

I would love to see it, but I don't think Wilson is going tosign on to be a platoon player. I'm sure he will find a job being a starter.

Cliff Floyd-OF- Mets Dec. 16 - 12:20 pm et

According to the Chicago Tribune, no deal between the Cubs and free agent Cliff Floyd appears imminent.

There haven't been any other teams mentioned in connection with Floyd the last few days. The Mariners were supposed to be interested, but it's doubtful that they still want him after landing Jose Vidro. The A's and Orioles were previously reported to have some interest.

The injury concern must be scaring everyone away. He could end up being quite a bargain.

I was extremely vocal at the end of 2004 for a Sosa/Floyd swap.

Floyd was an absolute stud in 2005.

The steroid controversy, the corked bat, leaving early the last game and the dip in performance probably all played a part in that deal falling apart, but I recall Minaya really wanting Sosa badly.

For once Hendry is doing the right thing here and waiting it out when it's obvious there's nobody else bidding. We might wind up with him for next to nothing.

Too bad he didn't do that with Marquis.

Other than the money, which the Tribune seems to have, I don't see a downside to signing Marquis. If he rebounds, great. If not, by that time one of the Cubs pitching prospects or Prior likely will have earned a spot in the starting rotation.

Marquis is both a hedge and a bet for Hendry.

you really think they're just going to cast him aside when he signed a 3 year, 21 mil contract? it took rusch becoming the worst pitcher in baseball before they took him out of the rotation, and they had a lot less committed to him.

Easily the most productive and reasonable option remaining. I wonder if the thought has even crossed hendry's mind.

No doubt. Jacque and Craig Wilson platooning in right will equal, at worst, an .850 OPS, with a realistic chance of being higher. For under $10 million, with only a two year commitment (for Jacque, that is, can't see Wilson getting more than two). Sign me up.

Soriano in center, Murton in left with Ward taking any starts against guys who just destroy right handed batters.

This is the best plan for the OF I've heard so far, short of a major trade. It's a shame that Wilson has far too much plate discipline to be in Hendry's radar.

If Guzman or another young prospect develops into a good pitcher over the next year, the additonal cost to the major league payroll is almost nil. The Cubs could eat a fair portion of Marquis' contract and trade him to another team. Aren't we talking about doing that very thing with Jacque because Felix Pie will be ready by midseason?

With the exception of 2004, Wilson has only ever been a platoon player.

He doesn't seem to be drawing much attention. The Yankees have talked to him about coming back as a 1B backup/platoon partner.

With Huff, Nixon, Floyd, Klesko, Nevin & Hillenbrand all still available, the market for 1B/corner OFs is soft. The Cubs could offer 300-400 or so ABs between RF and PH. Wilson would also have the opportunity to win the job outright if Jones is dealt or Murton falters.

I'd do this in a hearbeat. Soriano's stint in CF can be temporary if he doesn't work out there or doesn't like the position, you shift him to RF once Pie is ready.

btw- It'd also be nice to have an emergency catcher on the roster so that Barrett can be the primary RH pinch hitter on days when Blanco starts.

He would be great to have, but I just have the feeling he would sign with a small market team with the thought of being a regular. Can you imagine a bench with Wilson, Floyd, and Ward. That would certainly be an upgrade. Oops, almost forgot the two biggest bats on the bench Zambrano and Marquis.
