Didn't see a Lugo-specific thread, so here goes:

The Cubs see free agent Julio Lugo as a center-field candidate and are pursuing him.

The Cubs are fighting the Red Sox for both Lugo and J.D. Drew, though they likely only want one of them. The Red Sox would like to add both and play Lugo at shortstop. The guess is that Lugo would prefer to stay in the infield. However, all things being equal, he'd likely pick becoming the Mets' second baseman over anything else.

Interesting. However, I'm thinking when the Cubs duel with the Red Sox over players, the Boston club will come out on top most of the time.

Lugo in CF would be a waste of time and money. Why play Lugo in CF, when you can likely get Dave Roberts to put up similar numbers for a lot cheaper. Lugo's value comes from the ability to consistently put up a .340-.360 OBP in the middle IF, something that very few others can guarantee. In CF, it's a lot easier to get Lugo's production and then some from someone that can actually play the position defensively.

why not go for lugo at ss or 2B & Soriano in center. Anything short of an impact bat in the OF & one impact starting pitcher is unacceptable. I don't count Drew as the impact bat we need either. I'd get Lugo for short & then package izturis w/ murton to get a starter.

Since when does CT write analysis for Rotoworld?

This is what I like to see:

Boston Globe[/url]"]NL CENTRAL: The Cubs are into everything -- J.D. Drew, Julio Lugo, Lilly, Gil Meche, Jason Marquis, Gary Matthews Jr. The Astros need a power bat and a starting pitcher, not knowing whether Andy Pettitte or Roger Clemens will be back. The Cardinals will move Adam Wainwright to their rotation and may re-sign free agents Jeff Suppan and/or Jeff Weaver. They're also looking to upgrade their outfield. The Reds never sit still. They might move Adam Dunn for pitching.

remember how last year the Dodgers signed too many middle infielders and pawned the worst one off to some poor schmucks (the Cubs), why don't we sign Lugo and pawn Izturis off on the Red Sox?

Let me go on record as saying I think this is awful. It's starting to become clear that we are after 2nd tier players yet again.

Mark DeRosa, Gil Meche and Julio Lugo do not turn a 66 win team into a contender.

The Cubs are really, really dumb.

I really like Lugo at short.

Would that mean a Murt/Jacque platoon in left field if he played center? Because...that's good.

Per Gammons, Lugo out of the picture:

The Cubs are now out of the Julio Lugo sweepstakes despite Lou Piniella's fondness for his former shortstop, with the Red Sox, Mets and Blue Jays in line to see who is willing to step up to four years and $32M; Boston may be the preferred destination because of how he fits and the fact that he can play shortstop and lead off, but Mets GM Omar Minaya is also a huge Lugo fan.

Darn, I really wanted him to knock Izturis out of the starting lineup.

If the rumors of getting Westbrook for a SS and reliever are true, it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs did go and get Lugo. The money would be there, especially if Eyre is the reliever going. Westbrook at $6M and Lugo at ~$8M would about equal Izturis at ~$4.5M and whatever free agent they get at $7-10M.

lugo's put up an obp over .360 one time.

why does anyone think he'd do it consistently?

His career ops is .742. Why does anyone think this will dramatically improve?

Maybe it won't, but his .742 OPS is better than the .631 of Cesar Izturis.

However, if it's Lugo for CF, no thanks. Dave Roberts plz.
