DEBUNKED!

According to two producers at ESPN Radio, and Jerry Crasnick, from ESPN.com, no guest announced a potential deal between the Braves and Padres involving Jake Peavy.

However, it appears that today some false radio reports made their way onto the site. I'm not sure exactly how it all happened, as Jeff was going on the word of some trusted friends.

In my experience it's pretty easy for a rumor to get lost in translation or even made up as it gets passed along, kind of like a game of telephone. I only have a few guys I will listen to for the ever-present "radio rumors" as these are the toughest to confirm. We will probably stick to links and not radio reports for the next few weeks here.

I apologize for the error. Echoing what Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog said today...we can't listen to all the radio stations or Buster Olney spots ourselves, so there is a certain level of trust when reporting them. However, this is the Internet, so one has to be 100% confident before posting. We regret the mistake here at MLBTradeRumors.

100% confident? I wonder what that means.

would you trade Zambrano for Peavy?

No. Peavy has never been as good as Zambrano has been, and Zambrano looks like he's still capable of getting more dominant.

What about the control factor? Peavy's under contract for 2 more years, 3 with the option, at a very reasonable price. As we all know, Z's a FA after the season.

I guess this thread was a whole lot of hub-bub about nothing.

Any time that I get the opportunity to make a snide remark, you can't speak badly of the thread.

ERA+ wise Peavy was better than Zambrano in 2004 and 2005. I'd be mad if the Cubs didn't atleast entertain a deal for Peavy starting with Murton, Guzman, Pie and someone else.

In 2004 Peavy was better, but pitched a lot less. In 2005, he was marginally better, and pitched a little less. Plus, Zambrano was great in 2003, when Peavy struggled, and Zambrano was good in 2002, when Peavy struggled. Z was also obviously much better this year.

Peavy does have a great team friendly contract (why don't the Cubs ever sign these types of deals with their young guys?). But the one thing the Cubs have at their disposal is money, and I'd rather they pay more for the better player.

not to dwell on the obvious, but shouldn't we be more concerned with who will be better than who was better?

I am, Peavy's bad year is a little scary. Zambrano doesn't look to have such concerns.

and it was a very well-played snide remark, too.

Z's 2004>Z's 2003. I would hardly call his 2003 a great season.

But I'm just nitpicking and would take Z over Peavy any day. Z has 4 full years as a starter, and a fifth starting half the time, with an ERA under 4. Peavy has just 2.

And to answer Tim's question, I wouldn't even consider trading Z to the Braves for the package they're offering.
