That's exactly what I was thinking after 12 pages of this thread :).

I still want to wait and see the rest of the moves before judging this one in its entirety. Durham is 35 coming off a career year at 7 million, which means he is going to cash in probably around 9-10 million a year.

Durham is clearly the better option, but his money likely is cost prohibitive for the real target, whether its Soriano or any of a number of different pitchers.

I want to see how the OF and SP is settled before even considering the latest round of chicken little.

This is a bs move. This just tells me that Hendry is still out looking to sign overpaid mediocre players to fill out a position, why? I would rather have Theriot out there and put that 4mil towards a pitcher and Drew. If you are looking to upgrade at 2B go after Lugo or Giles. This is a ridiculous move, another overinflated contract to a mediocre player.

Mr. Hendry better get Drew now because the Cubs need him now more than ever.

Maybe Hendry is building the roster up for a big trade?

I don't think DeRosa can be traded until June 1st or something like that.

I doubt we'll see him play 2B everyday. He'll play some at 2B, he'll back up Ramirez at 3B, and he'll platoon with Jones in RF. I expect him to get around 300-400 at bats. This number could go up or go down, depending on what Theriot and EPatt do with opportunities given to them.

I think he meant Izturis, Jones, Theriot, Cedeno, or others.

Calling people who put thought into the ramifications of such a signing chicken little is pretty much BS if you ask me.

I like him as a back-up to Ramirez.

Do the Cubs have that high hopes on EPatt that they would bring him in to camp for an actual competition for the starting 2nd base job? Seems to me they would bring him in just to throw him out there and get some "seasoning."

Well he can play SS too. How well he plays the field i have no idea. Im thinking of the Cubs and trying to find work for him. I hate that. There are only so many opportunities to bat against leftis. Say maybe 30-40 starts a year.

If they trade Izzy and put The Riot at SS and DeRosa at 2b id be happy with that. Thats better than Izzy/The Riot middle infield and is actually cheaper. Im not too hopeful about that scenario.

Durham better sign for like $11M. (unless JH gets him, doubtful)

DeRosa would be a great #2 hitter if he keeps up last year's numbers. Now SS is up for grabs between Cedeno/Izturis/Theriot. Let Theriot have a shot there in the spring, PLEASE!

From Rotoworld:

The Cubs and Mark DeRosa have agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth about $13 million, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

It's way too much of a commitment to someone who only figures to be an asset against left-handers. A platoon of Jacque Jones and DeRosa in right field would be very productive, but the Cubs are probably going to give DeRosa a chance to be their primary second baseman. DeRosa turns 32 in February and is a career .260/.316/.366 hitter against righties (to put that in perspective, Neifi Perez is a career .268/.298/.376 hitter). Versus lefties, he has an impressive .306/.367/.497 line. Nov. 14 - 4:17 pm et

Yep, the the ticket I was shooting for! This way the Cubs still have depth when they aquire ARod.

You like paying him $4.3m to back him up?

This has "Jeff Blauser Redux" written all over it, unless he really is being brought in as a super-utility guy. Of course, if that is the case then he is probably overpaid for his role.

Those career stats make me real nervous.

except that Blauser was brought in because of his "great career numbers at Wrigley"

yes, but not just 3B. I like an .800+ OPS to get 450 AB's at various positions.

Where would he fit in our lineup? Assuming we upgrade RF and get a go CF would he be a 7 hitter?

If he repeated his 2005, he'd be fine #2. Unfortunately, his career trends don't support the idea of giving him that role.

We should all be nervous, this is the last move we need right now. Signing an unproven mediocre player to a bloated contract. Hendry never learns. He still loves his 2B. Did he not learn anything from last year's 2B debacle? You don't pay a utility man over 4mil, he will be starting somewhere.

Well EPatt is surely raising eyebrows in Arizona. While it would be somewhat of a surprise for EPatt to break camp with the Cubs, he will def be in Spring Training. If he continues to hit like he has been this fall, and he starts hot at Iowa, a callup would certainly be in order.

If EPatt is ready, DeRosa will not be blocking him.

Same with Theriot. If Theriot is not handed the SS position, he could also stake a claim to 2B. I see him breaking camp with the Cubs. If he performs in his playing time as well as he did last year, we will not see DeRosa block him.

DeRosa is insurance, so we don't have a situation like we did with Cedeno last year. If EPatt or Theriot performs, they will play. If they don't, at least we have someone who can play everyday who will not stink.

Further, he looks like a great platoon partner for Jones in RF. That I think we can count on.

I do wish, however, that Hendry didn't pay so much. I'm not sure why the contact is for so much. But, hey, he promised Piniella a good bench. Looks like Lou will get one.
