I see Boston as a nice place for Drew.

unfortunately, you're probably right. maybe boston will win the mats bidding and they won't be able to afford drew.

i'd rather have drew + schmidt than pierre + mats. of course, i'd love drew + mats.

Get Drew, move Jacque to CF and resign ARam and I would be happy with this offense.

Drew is the better CF and has more experience there, so leave Jones in RF. But, I agree that the Cubs are much improved by adding Drew, retaining Ramirez, and concentrating the rest of the money on pitching.

I think they would also need to pick up one of the many 2b options available this offseason also.

The list is long at that spot:

Soriano

Kent

Durham

Giles

Loretta

Lugo

Walker

Iwamura

Kent is not a FA. I believe he had an option or something picked up by the Dodgers last year. I want Durham, but I'd settle for Theriot if it meant the Cubs got Drew, re-signed Ramirez, and still addressed pitching accordingly.

I'd be very happy with Loretta, Lugo or Giles if we sign Drew and move Jacque to CF.

drew would likely be the one to play cf.

I agree with others that Drew is probably the better option in CF, a position that Drew apparently prefers to play.

I believe whichever team offers JD Drew Centerfield as hi position (along with a nice contract) will sign him. I don't see him signing with a team that wants him as a full time RF. He might be willing to play a few games a yr there (say 10 a yr), but he prefers CF, and the Cubs should offer that chance.

CF or RF doesn't matter to me as long as we sign him :)

Drew would be perfect for the Cubs. Furthermore, with Drew signed to a 4-5 year deal, the Cubs might look to trade Pie to upgrade secondbase, shortstop, or pitching.

It's a shame SD traded Barfield so quickly. Pie would have been a nice candidate to replace Cameron, and Barfield would have looked good in blue.

Or we could just keep Pie and play him in RF if we need to play Drew in CF. Get a 2B and be done with the offense for the winter.

Can Teixeira still play RF?

How about Pie, Jones, and Marshall for Tex?

(Ok, I'm dreaming...I know.)

And then some.

But it's still a wonderful dream.

This just popped up in my head. What about Pie and Novoa or Dempster for Hudson and Marcus Giles? This would clear up some money for the Braves and fill a couple of holes for us. They want to move both of them and they need a reliever and someone for when Andruw Jones leaves next year.

the cubs would have to be stark raving mad to give up pie for hudson & giles. you must be a braves fan.

This thread is ridiculous. You want zero part of JD Drew. He makes Aramis look like Charlie Hustle. Have fun with his 50 non-DL missed games a year.

Wolf,

You may know the answer to this: Did LaRussa and Drew have some kind of relationship issue? It seems to me that I remeber something along those lines, but I could be wrong.

I am surprised not too many are mentioning this.

on the other hand, the cubs have money to spend and desperately need left handed power, obp, and a cf. I would take the risk.

Because it's not particularly true, especially since he's left St. Louis.

You mean mentioning how inaccurate it is?

He missed more than half the 2005 season. I know a lot of people want him, but when you sign him you have to guess that he'll likely miss about a quarter of the season.

He went on the DL. He was 140+ games in 2004 and 2006. The claim was 50 non-DL missed games a year.

Since his first full season in 2000, Drew has averaged 120 games per season, so you are dead on. On average, he misses about 1/4 of the games each season. Now that number will fluctuate, but if you account for his missed games by having an adequate back-up option for CF on your 40-man roster Pie then Drew makes a lot of sense for the Cubs because he is exactly what they lack: a left-handed, RBI producing, OBP machine with the ability to play both RF and CF.

Get him.

But first resign Aramis and get one of the 3 top of the rotation starters.
