I'm really surprised everyone here thinks we have a shot at Drew.

He hit .283 with 20 homeruns, in Jim Hendry's world that's a downgrade from Jacque, especially after factoring in injury history and salary demands. Do you really think Hendry is going to do a 180 and put an emphasis on OBP%?

There is absolutely no chance that Drew will be a cub.

This thread is ridiculous. You want zero part of JD Drew. He makes Aramis look like Charlie Hustle. Have fun with his 50 non-DL missed games a year.

I am surprised not too many are mentioning this.

Because it's not particularly true, especially since he's left St. Louis.

He missed more than half the 2005 season. I know a lot of people want him, but when you sign him you have to guess that he'll likely miss about a quarter of the season.

Since his first full season in 2000, Drew has averaged 120 games per season, so you are dead on. On average, he misses about 1/4 of the games each season. Now that number will fluctuate, but if you account for his missed games by having an adequate back-up option for CF on your 40-man roster Pie then Drew makes a lot of sense for the Cubs because he is exactly what they lack: a left-handed, RBI producing, OBP machine with the ability to play both RF and CF.

Get him.

But first resign Aramis and get one of the 3 top of the rotation starters.

What he said.

There have been some signs that OBP is being valued, and will be addressed.

I do recall Hendry having interest in Drew last time he was a free agent. When Boras had him, Beltran, and Maggs out there.

still, I'd like to hear some hint from a Cubs' reporter (a legitimate one, not Levine or Sullivan), MLB insider or the team itself, that there is any interest in Drew. Until then, I assume there is none.

Well, he just became a free agent, somewhat out of nowhere. And nobody is reporting much of anything about the Cubs right now.

But you're right, I would prefer to hear something soon.

He went on the DL. He was 140+ games in 2004 and 2006.

Conveniently both his free agent contract years.

So did he conveniently get plunked last year?

Interpret as you wish, this guy can turn it on or off like a light switch. He's that talented. I don't believe in clutch, but this guy's as non-clutch as ARod's portrayed to be. His knees are damaged goods. I don't see him even coming close to 3/4 of a season if he plays centerfield.

I think the reason he wants to play CF is because it's easier on the body.

I don't understand that. In theory, CF cover more ground than a corner spot. Is it because more balls are hit to LF and RF as opposed to CF?

I think his claim was that all the starting and stopping and cutting you have to do in the corners was tougher on the body than just being able to go all out to get the ball when you're in CF.

That's a legit concern. But Scott Rolen has had multiple managers question his heart, and he's missed big chunks of time to injuries, likewise, Edmonds had a lot of "punk" type qualities to him as a youngster, and he's missed a lot of time for the past 5 years. It's still a good idea to employ such talented players if you get the chance.

The guy has outproduced Soriano over the course of career with the injuries. Even if you get him for 130 games he is more than likely going to add more value than most guys over 162 games. the key is making sure you have a good bench guy. Like a Craig Wilson or someone that isn't going to give negative production over the course of 30-40 games.

Chances are he comes for less money and years than most guys on the FA and will out-produce them in 3/4 of a season.

On Steiner's show today there was a lot of talk about how Drew opting out helped the Dodgers by freeing up a boatload of cash that they can throw at premiere free agents like Aramis.

However in Wrigley, the RF has to cover more ground than the CF.

Wouldn't that be crazy if LA ended up with Aramis? Wow.

I know this has little bearing on our discussion, but is anyone else impressed with the sheer whininess of Ned Colletti? Gee, Ned, Boras made it pretty obvious to you that Drew was deserving of more money, then you never called, and now you're surprised that he's leaving, and you'd like to chalk it up entirely to a lack of integrity?

You're an idiot.
