From Rotoworld:

Wade Miller-S-Cubs Nov. 9 - 3:29 pm et

Wade Miller re-signed with the Cubs Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal.

Miller missed most of the 2006 season following shoulder surgery, going 0-2 with a 4.57 ERA in five late-season starts. If healthy, he should have a spot in the Cubs' starting rotation in 2007 and could have an underrated fantasy impact.

Assuming it's under $3 million, it's a good signing. Though I wonder if Hendry will consider this his "tier B" signing and only bring in one more starter. :?

Heh...the little blurb on MLBTR.com about this made me think of Vance...

Back in the day (2001) Miller threw around 92-94, touching 97 at times. He was worked very hard by Larry Dierker, though, and a cascade of injuries followed. Miller ranked 12th in Pitcher Abuse Points in '01.

If he is to succeed as the Cubs' fifth starter, he's going to have to do so as a different pitcher due in no small part to Dierker.

Another good move by Hendry. I hope he can keep this up.

I missed the first good move..

I assume he was referring to Piniella.

If the Cubs are going to get better, it's going to be because of player acquisitions, not new coaches and resigning current players.

Ahh.

Losing Ramirez will wash that all away though right?

I really liked the movement on Wade's pitches at the end of the year, so let me echo the sentiment that as long as he wasn't more than 2-4 million dollars (with 4 stretching it) then this was a good sign.

I don't understand why Miller is a more appealing option than Marshall, Marmol, Mateo, Guzman, or Ryu.

He's actually performed at a high level before, none of those guys have.

Career ERA+ of 112. You might be lucky to get 100 innings of 90 ERA+ out of any of those other options. Miller might be able to give you 150 inning at 100-110, and it wouldn't be ridiculous if he gave you 190 innings at 120 ERA+.

"The Cubs hope to have filled one vacancy in the 2007 rotation by signing right-handed pitcher Wade Miller to a one-year contract. "-Cubs.com

He better not already be slotted in the rotation. If he was one of the pitchers that Hendry wanted to be in the rotation things are already looking bad. He should be a sign and hope you can get something guy. Not someone who is going to be relied on.

Not a bad move as Miller will be a good candidate for the back-end of the rotation.

Now the rotation is Zambrano, Hill, Miller (if healthty), then two of Prior/Guzman/Marshall/Mateo/Marmol.

One more is definitely needed. If that one more is Matsuzaka/Schmidt/Zito, we can probably focus the rest of the salary on the offense. If we have to go second tier, it might be best to bring in two more pitchers.

Prior + Miller = one spot filled IMO.

I would agree, with the exception being that 1-4 looks something like Zambrano, Matz, Padilla, Hill, and then Miller is 5th, and then Prior and the kids were penciled in as the guys who could step in if Miller falters.

That's a good point. I'm more than willing to accept Miller+Prior+young guys=5th starter. So long as we bring in an acceptable 4th starter (Batista, Padilla, etc.) and sign a top of the rotation starter (Schmidt please).

yeah, i recently looked at his numbers and was surprised to see that he was quite good and healthy in 2001 and 2002. since then, however, he's either been average or hurt. i don't get my hopes to high for a guy when the last time he was worth something was 2002.

My hopes aren't high either. Well, my expectations aren't high. I do think he's a good bet at low cost though.
