And Rothschild is brought back

This is terrible. Thanks to the fact that sweet Lou was hired, we get this dope back next year. If Lou truly is hired I will displeased anyways, but if he brings Rothschild back I will be pissed. He has been with these players for over 5 years now and has not helped to develop any of them into solid pitchers(Big-Z not included)

The only positive out of this is it sounds like Lou is going to get a short deal. They must have showed him that they want to win now and are going to spend the money this offseason.

I thought the Cubs went backwards when they hired Baker. If they hire Piniella, they are headed back into the dark ages. At this point, Piniella is a terrible choice for manager. What else is Hendry going to copy next ? Lets see, White Sox, oh they won the World Series with some good speed and intangibles. Lets do that! Ah, the Tigers, they were horrible and brought it an old veteran manager. Lets do that too! Yay!

Too bad Kranitz won't be the pitching coach.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel[/url]"]The Marlins won't need to find a new pitching coach after all.

Rick Kranitz, who guided four rookie starters to double-digit victories in his first year on the job, agreed Friday night to return in 2007.

According to an industry source, Kranitz will make $110,000 on a one-year deal, which represents a 38 percent raise but still leaves him near the bottom of the pay scale for major league pitching coaches. Kranitz made $80,000 this season after coming over from the Cubs, where he spent 22 years.

The Marlins originally offered Kranitz a two-year contract late last week but the two sides could not agree. Moreover, he was curious to see what would happen with former Marlins manager Joe Girardi, who has interviewed for the same position with the Cubs and Nationals.

However, Lou Piniella appears to be the favorite in Chicago and there are no guarantees Girardi would be the choice in Washington either. Rather than get shut out, Kranitz opted to take the Marlins' offer and return to a young staff that values him greatly.

Sounds like he was waiting to see if Girardi would get hired here.

While having Kranitz back would be great, I'm not nearly sold enough on Girardi to have this totally crush me.

LAST PLACE AGAIN BABY WOOOOO

maybe we'll have the #1 pick in 2008

i hate the cubs :(

Just curious how that would guarantee a last place finish?

I realize Lou might not be #1 choice for many around here, but I think because of that all of the "Lou-fear" is really getting overblown.

If the CUbs go and get some players to improve this team, I think Lou would do fine. It all depends though on the player personnel that Hendry acquires.

Agreed. If they actually wise up a bit and use this rumored extra money to get 2-3 SERIOUS impact players, Lou isn't the end of the world. He's far, far, faaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr from my first choice, but if they manage to improve this team we will see marked improvement from the last 2 years. How much of that you can chalk up to Piniella, well, that's pretty subjective. I think if you give him the right team he can win. The issue is whether or not the Cubs are capable of getting that team.

dusty didn't work, so hendry just gets dusty's white equivalent. good stuff.

Don't forget-it's Dusty with yelling, so it'll be "awesome to see him go crazy at least". /sarcasm

If Hendry was told that he can't hire Bochy (as the article stated) it makes me wonder about Hendry's relationship with the higher-ups. I believe McDonough earlier stated that it would be up to Hendry to decide who to hire, but this report seems to contradict that. I think McDonough needs to either let Hendry be the GM, no strings attached, or else fire him and hire someone he trusts.

There is no truth at all to that part of the report. None whatsoever.

That's good to know. I still hold on to a slim hope that Bochy is hired over Lou.

The story makes no sense on several levels. It stated that Piniella was the guy Hendry has been after all along, and then goes on to say that his higher ups had to shoot down the idea of him interviewing Bochy.

Hopefully, Hendry is using the Bochy angle to get Lou to sign for a cheaper, shorter term deal. Last time when he was all ga-ga over Dusty, he was pretty much at the mercy of Baker's agent. By dragging this process out, my hope is that Hendry thinks that Lou will be more likely to sign a reasonable deal.

Change the thread title--Piniella gets the job according to the ST.

I'm still reading that it's not a done deal and that Piniella's salary demands could keep it from happening. While it appears Piniella is the top choice, I don't think it's certain he's gotten the job, at least not from all the sources.

Come on Lou, make insane demands! :D

...please?

Thanks, Bruce.

It seemed so strange that McDonough would say "hire who you want as long as it's not that BRUCE BOCHY feller!"

We'll change the thread title when an official announcement on the new manager is made.

I'm hoping Hendry is unwilling to devote a large chunk of change to manager next year. Just say you've got a two million dollar limit (gets you Bochy's contract, Girardi) and if he really wants to coach here, he can do it on a make good contract. Lead us to the division and a playoff run Lou, we'll bring you back...

That's what we get for reading an article in a paper other than the Daily Herald. :D

If it is Piniella, then Hendry needs to "Uncle Lou proof" team. Otherwise, if Hendry doesn't make major changes, and gives Piniella the current team, you can chalk down another 90 loss season. But that goes without saying.

(edit) Upon further review, if the Cubs hire Piniella, does anybody think Piniella and Guillen (cause we know those two have calm personalities, and allow reason to rule the day  ) will at some point during the season, began a feud?
