Well i did like the Mariner teams he managed. I never thought he got in the way of them. The really only negative i have heard on him is he is so demanding of his pitchers and doesnt tolerate crap from them. The old school saying 'hitters hating pitchers'....sometime i believe he actually hates them. Obviously he doesnt otherwise he would be a terrible manager. Just perception. Him and Dibble fighting in the locker room is classic.

Bruce, Thanks for the insight on Lou a couple pages back. I like hearing one of his strengths is he's adaptable.

And....whoa, the Cubs thinking about Soriano in CF? Just whoa. I like it!

It was pretty much gospel in Tampa that he hates young players if he can have an alternative and doesn't understand the importance of OBP, and if you don't believe me listen to him talk on Fox, it's pretty clear that's where he stands.

The last thing I want is a white, insane version of Dusty Baker.

Ive listened to Lou on many broadcasts this year. During a Cubs game he pointed out the Cubs werent patient enough looking at pitches and needed to improve their obp. On the other hand i have heard him talk about things where he passes the obp thing over. If all he cared about was average why did he like Jay Buhner so much? Ok, thats not really a question, i just thought id drop his name.

One thing the Cubs suck at is walking batters. This trait is something Lou will not accept from his pitchers and it will drive him crazy. He won't take it lightly.

Likes walking or doesn't like walking? Oh geez the conflicting reports. That's good if he beleives that maybe he can stress to his batters to be a little more patient.

I am starting to sweeten on Sweet Lou. Can you imagine Wrigely when he goes on one of his temper tantrums? The Wrigely crowd would just go crazy.

Bruce, do you think the Cubs will go after Zito this off-season? And also, who do you see Hendry going after for the bench role? I would like to see Hendry add some more versatility to their bench this off-season. Edited by baseball7897

I don't see how Piniella is a really "bad" idea (not targetting anyone specifically but it's been said). . Because if Piniella really wants to win perhaps that means JH and owner ship want to win too. And this is a clue, that they are willing to open up the wallets to bring in some real nice talent.

If that's the case. GIVE ME Piniella AND GIVE ME TALENT!!

They've always wanted to win, and they've already opened the wallets. The problem is Hendry's ability to use money to acquire quality players.

Exactly. Hendry wastes about $10-15m in budget per season on players whose roles could be filled for far less. He's spent his budget poorly.

Baker helped Hendry waste that money by reccomending certain players. The question is, will Piniella help Hendry waste that money on crappy "role players". Or will he pressure Jim to go out and get guys like Soriano for a change. I eagerly await the outcome of that answer.

That Travis Lee, man, that guy is a ballplayer.

Did he say he wanted him on his team?

Bruce, how does the brass view Theriot - any idea? Is he seen as a potential everyday 2B/leadoff candidate, or strictly as a utility guy? He shows more patience than just about anyone else at the big-league level in the organization, and even for a group that doesn't value OBP highly his skills seem like a natural fit for the leadoff spot.

He'll make the team out of spring training. What his role is will be up for debate at the organizational meetings next month. I'd like to see him thrown in the mix to start.

He said earlier they would look at Schmidt or Zito.

Bruce, the walk, doesn't Hendry know what it means yet?

The light is going on. Maybe not at the speed of light, but they're not ignoring the poor walks and OBP totals from this year. It'll be on the table at the org meetings.

More like at the speed of clog.

I can't believe it takes a 66 win season combined with the 2nd worst

OBP in MLB for these idiots to realize they have some issues regarding

offensive philosophy.

Bruce, if a tree falls in the woods and ronnie woo woo isn't there to yell about it, do the cubs still suck?

Also, do all of today's questions mean you won't be doing the Q and A (or have I already missed out on that one)?

I'm of the belief that Piniella isn't coming to Chicago unless he knows they fully intend to spend money (wisely) and get proven major league talent. . . not washed up old balls talent, either.

If Lou is the man, I see the Cubs doing their best (however pathetic their best may be) to win and win now.

If Joe is hired, I see them taking the "build for the future" route.

I also believe that Soriano will go to whichever team promises him the starting 2b job.

I also believe that Matt Murton will make the all star team next year.

I'm still doing the Q and A. This thread just seemed to take on that quality.

No it wasn't. He was playing Toby Hall, Jorge Cantu, Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli among others. It actually seemed like he had a lot of patience with the kids, but his problem was that management would not give him ANY worthwhile veterans to mix in which made it almost impossible to win on a consistent basis.

If the New York Yankees are in the mood to trade Rodriguez this winter, Piniella’s presence could help the Cubs land the superstar.

If signing Piniella means that ARod will come to Chicago, then I support his hiring. Otherwise, I'd rather have Girardi.

I wonder what Aramis thinks of Sweet Lou?

Exactly what I was thinking. Only way I want Sweet Lou is if A-rod comes along

Nor did he answer BalsaWoodKeyBoard's question about being a Communist. :D

This may have been posted somewhere but I just read Hawk Harrelson gushing over Lou. "If Piniella comes to Chicago this city will have the 2 best managers in baseball"

Yeah, when I read that, my Lou acceptance went way down.

Sometimes I wonder if that guy just sits down and tries to think of every stupid thing he could possibly say and then decides to go for it.

I don't think he thinks at all. He just says.

He lamented the state of baseball, drowing in stats, and then said they needed more thinkers. He hates thinkers. Those that think about the game (as opposed to those that feel it), are his mortal enemy. He has no respect for the baseball opinion of anybody who is not a major league player or a 30 year scout.
