I'll mention it here just to drum up some interest, but it's about that time to start thinking about the mock selection committee we've done the last couple years. Hopefully bukie will run it again, cause I'm incompetent.

What's the process (besides the obvious of selecting the teams)? It sounds interesting.

For those who care about the NIT, E Tennessee St., Austin Peay, South Alabama, and Marist have all grabbed NIT bids for winning the regular season conference title but failing to win the tourney.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that today as well. I'd be interested again.

does anyone else think memphis benefits from playing in conference usa and are not a top 5 team? i've seen them play several times this year and always come away unimpressed mainly because of the teams they beat.

Yep, the only team they've played in two months is Gonzaga, who they barely beat. And Gonzaga was just discussed as a team not worthy of an at large.

I wonder where they get seeded.

I agree on Memphis. But they will be at least a 2-seed simply because they will breeze thru their conference tourney, while teams like Wisconsin, UNC, Texas A &M, Texas, and others all have to get thru other top 15 teams in order to win their conference tourney.

1's- Ohio St, UCLA, Florida, Kansas

2's- Memphis, Texas A &M, Wisconsin, Georgetown (because I think they win the conf tourney)

3's- Washington St., Louisville, UNC, Maryland (because I think they win the conf tourney)

4's- Texas, So. Illinois, Nevada, Marquette (because they go further than Pitt or ND in the tourney)

I would give Memphis a 2 seed right now but if they win their conference tournament and have some other potential number 1's lose early in their conference tournaments (UCLA, Wisconsin, Florida, Kansas) then they could move up to a #1 seed.

Here's the thing about Memphis though. High RPI of 8, which is worthy enough of a 2 seed. But their SOS is only 73. Even worse, their top 50 record is only 1-3, with their only top 50 win against Kentucky. Only four top 50 opponents in the season. Not too good. I'd be very surprised if they get a anything higher than a 4 seed.

Memphis getting a 1 seed would be a joke. Only 8 games against the RPI top 100? And only 5-3 against them? No way to they deserve a top seed.

They won't get a 1. I'm sure the committee will recognize what a weak schedule they played and give them a 4 seed (I hope).

Yeah, I guess I worded my statement incorrectly. Personally, I don't think Memphis is that good and I don't think they should be seeded too high. But they could move up to #2 or #3 in the nation after the conference tournaments and I don't think the committee will give them lower than a 2 seed if they win the C-USA tournament.

haha, i leave the site for a while and come back to see that i'm not the only one who thinks memphis is over-rated...i don't think they should they get a #2 seed let alone a #1.

I doubt UNC drops to a three, unless they bow out in thier first game of the ACC tourney. I'd probably swap them w/ Gtown in your seedings.

Also, if Texas goes to the Big XII championship game (which would require they beat A&M), I think they'll be a 3 seed.

Sorry, missed this earlier. We do it over 3 or 4 days from Thursday-Sunday. We start with everyone submitting every team they think has an argument to be an at large team. I don't believe there's a limit on # of teams you can submit, but obviously you keep it within reason as it's unlikely anyone truly feels 70 teams have at large arguments.

After all those are submitted all teams that reach a certain %, (I know in the past we had it at 7 out of 9 ballots, but it depends on the # of people participating) are put in as locks. From there, all teams that received at least one vote, but less than the percentage are put into the bubble pool. You can make your case for any team you wish in the thread, and then by Friday night you rank all the bubble teams from 1 on down. After that a composite ranking figures out who the at large teams are at that point. If the chalk holds up in the final conference tourneys, teams that were just out would then be moved in as necessary. Finally once all the at larges are taken care of, there is a final 1-65 ranking of all the teams we've put in the tourney, the rankings are combined, and we come up with our own field of 65. In the 2 years we've done it we haven't had to deal with any Sunday spoilers putting a non at large into the tourney, so hopefully that holds out(on a personal level too) otherwise things can get confusing.

It sounds kind of daunting now that I re-read that, but really to participate doesn't take that much effort, and is fairly easy to zoom through if you've followed the season all year, which seems like you have. The tough stuff falls on the person who runs it compiling all the numbers which is why I'm shamelessly begging Bukie to run it again.

Sounds interesting and fun. If you/bukie decide to run it, I'm in.

Arron Afflalo was named Pac-10 Player of the Year. :D Arron's the fifth Bruin to win the honor, joining Marques Johnson (1977), David Greenwood (1978, 79), Kenny Fields (1983) and Ed O'Bannon (1995).

Pac-10 Freshman of the Year: F Chase Buddinger, Arizona (I think Cal's Ryan Anderson was robbed)

Pac-10 Coach of the Year; Tony Bennett, Washington State (much deserved)

The All-Pac-10 team:

G Arron Afflalo - UCLA (Compton, CA)

F Jon Brockman - Washington (Snohomish, WA)

G Aaron Brooks - Oregon (Seattle, WA)

G Darren Collison - UCLA (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)

F Lawrence Hill - Stanford (Glendale, AZ)

G Derrick Low - Washington State (Honolulu, HI)

G Kyle Weaver - Washington State (Beloit, WI)

F Marcus Williams - Arizona (Seattle, WA)

G/F Nick Young - USC (Los Angeles, CA)

to be fair, you can't blame them for all the good teams bolting frrom CUSA. Cincy, Louisville, DePaul, Marquette, Charlotte and St. Louis all had varying degrees of success in basketball, with the first four obviously being the best historically. And, schools like UTEP, USM, Tulsa and UAB, which have had decent programs in the past, really were nothing to speak about this year. Memphis won the games that it played, which is all they can do, really.

What makes Memphis better than any other mid-major?

We're still behind Louisville, who we plastered two months ago. Oh, well, if there's any justice, the Irish will smack them in the Big East title game.

Who cares about who some goof votes for as the polls mean nothing in college basetball until the last one.

I'm not thrilled with playing UConn in the first game because I have no idea what UConn team is going to show up. I'd love to get another shot at ND.

I think any top 2 team in a major conference can pop into a 1 or 2 if they win their conference tournament.

Colin Falls and Russell Carter both made the all-Big East first team, and Tory Jackson and Luke Harangody both made the all-Big East freshman team.

I'm excited for tomorrow. I'll be watching the first round of the Big East tourney most of the day.

And with a little more interest on the game at 2 I'll bet!
