It's not the Big East's fault that a lot of those schools don't have big-time football programs. And saying the Big East has no depth is ridiculous - only a small number of those schools can be considered pretty irrelevent as far as basketball goes (USF, Rutgers, Providence). UConn and Syracuse are powers every year and Pitt, West Virginia, Marquette, Georgetown, Villanova, Cincy and Louisville are good to very good most years. The Big East has been ranked #3, #2 and #2 the past three years in conference RPI, while the Big Ten was #6, #6 and #1 during that stretch. Last year was the first year since '01 that the Big Ten had a better conference RPI than the Big East. So to call them "more of a mercurial phenomenon than a power conference" is completely absurd.

When was the last time a team from the big east could even compete with Ohio State or Michigan? Heck mostof the last few years Iowa or Wisky would have won the Big East.

Did you even ever watch James Augustine? Do you even know who he is? Not a very good post.

Yes I did. I watched him play many times that year as I wanted to see if Illinois could go undefeated. He was the weak spot on that team. Before you jump all over me for that, I realize that saying Augustine was the weak spot on that team isn't really saying too much because of Head, Brown, and Williams. But he never did anything that stood out to me. He just always seemed to just be on the court while the three guys I mentioned before did most of the work.

Now, I'll admit that I didn't see him much last year after Head and Williams left so he could have improved a bunch and could have been more of a focal point in their offense last year. But two years ago, he didn't really do anything that stood out to me and I wasn't very impressed with his play.

Fair enough. Good response.

I'm pretty sure West Virginia and Louisville would have pounded Michigan last year. In 2003 Miami was still in the Big East and I'm pretty sure they could compete with any team in the country for those few years.

Are you talking about football? This is a basketball thread.

If you aren't talking about football, then that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here.

Yeah this is why, I didn't realize that the rpi thing was for basketball. My bad.

no it isn't as I posted earlier the guy had a great year his junior year. There is more to basketball than just scoring. Anyone who has played the game at higher levels can understand Auggies value.

What do you think about tomorrow night's Bragging Rights game?

I just hope Illinois rolls. No matter how good of a coach Anderson is (and I believe he is great), losing to Mizzou would be embarrassing simply because of the barren cupboard left by Quinny.

But, I have all the respect in the world for a new and cleaner Missouri basketball program. Here's to a good season for Mizzou (beginning 12/20, of course).

I think it would be a good win and a bit of validation for their hot start for Mizzou, but embarrassing for U of I? It's a rivalry game, and Mizzou has only one loss and already dusted a decent-at-least Arkansas team. And like I said earlier in this thread, Snyder always was a decent recruiter, Mizzou's roster consists of several recruits who were well regarded nationally. Is it to the level of Illinois, who has been at the top of the B10 for a while? No, but it's a rivalry game on a neutral floor, and as such I don't think it's a disgrace to lose the game.

After putting a beatdown on Pitt, the Wisconsin Badgers are ranked #4 in the AP and #5 in the Coaches Poll. As Da Ali G would say "Respect". Look forward to the Ohio St game in Madison on Jan. 6th.

can't look past Georgia. If the Badgers beat the Bulldogs, then OSU, they might go to and hang onto number one in the country for a good month and a half thanks to a pretty pathetic BigTen. and I wouldn't be surprised to see them do that, then end the year on an 0-3 skid.

with the way UI fans have run their mouths RE: KU the last 4 years, I don't know who to root for. On the one hand, it's Mizzou, and I hate rooting for Mizzou. But it would be nice for the Big XII to get a nice noncon scalp, and it would be hilarious to see the Illini freak out over the loss. Plus, I'd like Mizzou to feel nice and confident coming into the KU games.

There. I talked myself into it. [bathing in lye]Go Mizzou.[/bathing in lye]

It would be embarrassing because we haven't lost to Mizzou since Carter was president.

Or 1999, in Snyder's first season.

Do you think we'll beat you this year? I'd love to hear an honest opinion. I think we have a great shot, especially adding a 4th scoring option in Walker.

Posted

if we play like we have been? me, you, and three guys from the rec center have a shot.

To be honest, observers who i trust were underwhelmed by Walker in his first game (against what was described as "the least athletic team in college hoops".) But it was his FIRST game, and I excpect him to be a matchup problem for every team you face.

Anyway, to answer your questgion, of course you could beat us this year. You beat us last year, and you had less talent. But I think we'll win both games, only because we'll come out pretty jacked up for both. We play down to our competition, but I think you're seen as a threat, and you'll be taken seriously.

So my prediction is we'll win both games, but if we do lose, it will be at AFH again. I think the Bramlage streak continues for another year or two.*

*I reserve the right to amend this opinion based on our next game or two. I think those performances will be very telling as to how good this KU team will be.

Yeah, I know.

Anywho, kenpom.com has a new feature(new to me at least) predicting the outcomes of each game the rest of the season. I like the way he's got U of I's looking.

http://kenpom.com/sked.php?y=2007&team=Illinois&t=p

His projections have UC Davis finishing 2-27 which would make my prediction of the football team getting more wins that the basketball team this year come true.

Good game. I am stoked for it. I think if we handle the ball well we win. If we don't you guys keep the tradition of first year coaches always winning. You guys are better than everyone thinks and I think we are as well.

lol.. I watched the game and for only practicing with the team for a day, I was impressed with Walker. I hope the Bramlage streak ends.. I think we're poised for a top 4 finish in the Big 12 this year... Call me crazy, but I think we'll do it.

They have Marquette going 23-8, with Connecticut, Georgetown, West Virginia, and Notre Dame finishing above them in conference. Notre Dame seems good this year, but the idea of West Virginia going 11-5 in conference when replacing that much of their roster makes me question his judgment. 10-6 for Marquette seems about right in conference.

They have ND going 26-3, with their remaining 2 losses coming by 4 points total.

(Actually it projected 24-5, but game by game it came down to 26-3)

This means, of course, that these ratings have lost all credibility.
