But I don't see the problem if they do. Start times aren't sacred. I'd rather start times be named for sponsors than stadium names. This is no worse, and actually better, than the Cubs renaming the bleachers, the Bud Light bleachers. I'd rather have the Cubs start night games at 7:11 than to have those dumbass chairs painted in the dugout to sell furniture. So, yea...to each his own.

You don't see a problem with it, but you then you go on to say that those dumbass chairs painted in the dugout to sell furniture. So that bothers you and the 7:11 thing doesn't. I think we have to agree the Cubs gotta be the least team that takes advantage of advertisements.

Subtle ad placement here and there isn't bad. It's a source of revenue.

I don't mind the little sponsorships like this one or the "Cingular call to the bullpen" or the "State Farm Insurance run". I even kind of liked it when a couple stadiums had the very simple "Gap" ads in left-center and right-center. I always found that to be quite clever.

I'm not a fan of the rotating billboard behind homeplate, although that's better than having all the walls littered with several different ads. If they start seriously talking about putting ads on players uniforms, then I'll be angry. If I wanted to see that, I'd start watching Nascar.

My relatives just got my daughter the Curious George DVD, and that thing is nothing but a big adverstisement. The "games" include stuff involving Dole bananas, VW's, etc. It's pretty shameless

Regardless of it being a few minutes, they're changing the start time of the games to accommodate a sponsor. That's it. There is no inherent benefit to the fans for this change.

I understand that baseball is a business and that it's all about making money, but the game itself shouldn't be changed. That's why it's ridiculous.

The game itself has not been changed. It's ridiculous to suggest it has. They don't require 7 outs or 11 strikes. The game is the same, the start time changed. Big deal. Why does there have to be a benefit to fans to justify any change? It's not like it's harmful in any way.

I agree. While the fans aren't beneifted, I don't see them harmed in anyway. Teams already have differing start times. The Cubs start afternoon games at 1:20. Some teams start them at 5 minutes after the hour, others 10, some fifteen. If someone wants to offer them money to make it 11 minutes after the hour, so be it.

I don't see where this is a big deal at all.

Sure we may not like sponsorships. We might think it affects the purity of the game. This doesn't bother me one bit.

Yeah but teams don't name their starting time after a sponser. I guess to each his own.

Whether the team starts at 7:11 or 7:05 or 7:15 doesn't matter at all. Painting ads on the dugout changes the asthetics of the park. It doesn't bother me, but if I had the choice, the 7:11 time seems to be less intrusive.

I have to say this would have been a little annoying, but we've talked about stuff like this in my Sports Management class, and it's bound to happen. I'm sure there will be ads on uniforms before it's all said and done. If this was offered to the Cubs and they refused I would be upset. It's a 4 minute difference that has no bearing on the game whatsoever, and brings in what I think has got to be a pretty good chunk of change. If that chunk of change goes into making the product (stadium, experience, players) better, than I'm all for it. Edited by sherwood921

How about just putting th sponsopship in the team name? The Nippon Ham Cubs, anyone?

Considering the stink that was raised when the Angels changed their name to the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim," I think there would be enough potential backlash to prevent most teams from trying to use a corporate sponsor in the team name.

If it meant us getting the extra money needed to outbid some other teams for Zito, Schmidt, or others, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I didn't see a windfall from the bud-lite bleachers or the expansion of the bleachers in general.

Jeez, a lot of you guys must retch when you go to games at any age level and you see the ads/sponsor signs along the wall/field/stadium/etc..

Lighten up, Francis.

Hey, anyone want some gum?

I'm still waiting for the day that some baseball or football team announces that they will be moving to Tampax Field at Massengil Park

If you're expecting to see how every cent is spent, then your expectations aren't very realistic.

Maybe they'll use the money to pay the light bills for the added night games in the future. Who cares? It's not an intrusive ad.

Move Cubs start times to 4:20 anybody? Zig Zag could sponsor it.

Now that's a time change I could get behind!

Hell, great idea since the last Cub season was up in smoke.

I have thought for years it would be clever if WGN Radio did this for the Cubs.

it's all one company though. In that case, it would be money going from the left pocket into the right

I think it's a great idea. Right after the game the Sox fans can go rob a 7/11 as a family night theme.

This is why I said the Sox were a joke earlier. If you were going to pick one baseball team to have a 7-Eleven tie in, it would've been them. Truth is stranger than fiction.

The whole Sox-fan theme with the fans committing crimes is a bit over the top IMO. Most of those Sox fans like the other teams in the city that Cubs fans do. I just think it's pretty funny how people say that Sox fans "rob convenience stores" and yet during basketball season, the Bulls have a phrase saying "Welcome to the United Center, home of the world's greatest fans!" I guess those people stealing beer in a convenience store and "beating their wives" are great fans in the winter, but not in the summer.

I understand hating the Sox for the crosstown reason, but to criticize a fanbase on a pointless stereotype which bashes Chicagoans as a whole, is unncessary.

guys, we need to hang out.

I, for one, am getting quite sick and tired of "subtle and new" ways of promoting.

Is nothing sacred anymore? You have stadiums named after corporations, parts of stadiums named after corporations, naming rights for highlights, innings (the Fifth Third bank sponsors every 5th inning on WGN radio), and countless other things. Enough is enough.

I would not be shocked to see team naming rights sold off in my lifetime. I could take my furture children to a game to see the Cubs play the Pittsburgh Pepsi's. Would that be ok then? Would people say "Oh, well they're just trying to make some money, so it's ok in the long run."

There are some things you just don't do.
